I think I started my update EIGHT HOURS ago and it is still at step 3/6, Downloading patch 493>495 53%.

Last update I deleted the entire game, moved it to my SSD, and it went fast on patching, which shouldn't have mattered anyway as SSDs are for loading data.

Now it is on my SSD it is back to taking hours on this connection:

Well first, it was over two gigabytes. Second, it was distributed by bittorrent (if you didn't use steam), so your speed depends partly on other people uploading. It also doesn't help that the patcher doesn't share back while it's patching, so just as someone finishes a download, the patcher goes away for half an hour or more to install the patch (it can take a long time even on SSD), which means less people uploading during those critical first hours.

The monthly patch torrent is usually available a few hours before the patch client is told about it. If you use a regular bittorrent client to download it, you can even leave it sharing while you patch, to help others download it.

I've friends who are so frustrated with the long patching (non-steam) that they set aside the game for now, not wanting to come in until something is done.

Realistically, an hour of patching is already long, let alone hours of patching to play a game. Please look into this issue.

Torrent may have been a good way to get the client out quick when it was first release but non-steam players need something more long term, stable and consistent.

My Shroud account thru Steam always takes 3-5 minutes to update, the same cannot be said for my non-steam Shroud client.

I run 2 SOTAS on my computer to dual box with an alt.

SOTA Launcher: 4.5 hours to download and install
Steam: 5 minutes to download and install.

My biggest issue is that the incremental patches always seem to error when applying the patch forcing a download from 0 -> Current. Getting the initial patch isn't a big deal, getting it to install cleanly without downloading from start is.
