Ah, so that's what happened! I saw dead alpha decay from someone else killing it, so I was waiting for alpha to respawn, killed a few betas, and then noticed the quest had advanced.

 

So I just noticed that even though I had talked to the farmer, "Inform Farmer Alpha Wolf is Dead" was still on my task list. (Note: as noted above, I hadn't actually killed it yet)

Then I talked to the farmer.

Now I have both "Inform..." and "Kill the Alpha Wolf" on my task list!

In build 595, I've killed the Alpha Wolf (twice) and the farmer won't acknowledge that he is dead.

I have the "Inform the farmer..." task in my journal.

 

Hmm, ok, after running around the zone for a bit, I came back to the farmer and he acknowledged that the Alpha was dead and quest was completed.

 

The same happened to me ...

But the remembering of the farmer hasn't come - yet

after clicking alpha wolf a few times more, he remembered and the quest was finished...

 

I have the same problem with a twist. I got the quest from farmer. Went to the wolf lair. No alpha wolf. Killed a beta wolf and got the inform farmer. Went back to turn quest in, no luck. Went back to wolf lair waited around Alpha re-spawned. Had to chase it down (kept running away back and forth for several minutes (I am guessing AI is set if you are high enough level, low level critters steer clear of you?). Anyway, eventually killed the wolf (he runs fast, had to wait for a range spell to pop up (I'm melee)) and went back to farmer to turn in quest and no luck as of yet. Will keep trying!

 

I think part of the problem is that he thinks you've killed a second (or later) wolf and refuses to give you credit for it. Even if it's on your task list.

Similarly, if you kill the alpha wolf after it thinks you already have, it still leaves "Kill the Alpha Wolf" on your task list. And "The commotion of fighting several wolves..." is in the Knowledge Journal part of my journal THREE times.

Suggestion: at least killing the alpha wolf should always try to clear "Kill the Alpha Wolf".

Still broken for me in 594.

 

In 598, it seems that my entire journal got wiped, so junk tasks are no longer a problem! In a way that does fix the problem, fortunately I only had two or three quest threads going and I think I can remember where I was in them. Everything else was junk tasks.

 

I cannot find an alpha wolf only beta wolves.

You can find him close to the farm house. Head to the Rocks near the beach, there is a small kind of cave. I met him twice between the beach and this cave.
