First computer should be a sig requirement so you know when you're speaking to an elder...

I had a Commodore-64 and played Wasteland on it.

Skip ahead... Packard-Bell Pentium MMX 150mzh (yeah, it was a Sears exclusive and it really DID run at 150mhz), I think it had a 6gb hard drive to start with? It came with Windows 95b, which could use FAT32.

I played Ultima Online with it. I fell in love with the complexity of crafting and the various skills. It's a big part of why I ended up playing Star Wars Galaxies and why I am quite happy with what I've seen in this game too.

The abacus isn't a computer though as it doesn't compute anything - it's merely an aid to help humans do it. Although this very thing and you posting it will no doubt invite some interesting discussion on whether it is or not.

My first box was one of these

I used to play some dbase games on it. Was actually a lot of fun.

When UO launched I finally gave up my "hot rod" AMD 486 with the 133 clock speed and built a box with an Intel 166. Sadly...I didn't think I needed the "new" MMX stuff and so I found myself a bit slower than some folks.
That was mitigated somewhat though by having a USR 56k modem when many were still on 28k and 33.6. I remember you had to pre order the 56k chip which they sent you later. You popped out the 33.6 and Varoom :)

If I remember correctly, even with a "56k" modem you couldn't get that speed. It was capped by the FCC at 53.3kbs/s. I think it was some restriction on the power output that devices connected to the POTS system could emit. And even then, unless you had really good phone lines and other factors, you weren't getting the 53k/s(at least not consistently.)

my favorite game on here was Castle Adventure.

The first system I bought just for my personal use was an HP with a Pentium III 20 years later.

I am sorry to hear that.

When my friends got the Amiga I got this and smacked them...

    ;)

EDIT: All Historical Computer threads need the Atari > Commodore posting. This is it! :)

Started with the Atari 2600, to the Atari 400 (with membrane keyboard, 16KB of RAM), then the Atari 1040ST model.

Then I read the Macintosh User Interface Guidelines book and everything about the superior Macintosh GUI made sense. From then on Macintosh was the only way to go! I even have Ultima III for the Mac.

The Amiga was ahead of it's time, from it's single user but pre-emptive multi-tasking graphical OS, 32 bit CPU, dedicated hardware for graphics & sound etc.

I envy you - used to drool over Amiga articles in the BYTE magazines :)

OH: Did you know that Tron was disqualified back then for getting a Academy Award for Special Effects because the use of Computers was called: CHEATING!

The Amiga was used back then for alot of Special Effects in Movies we love. Star Trek Next Generation, Babylon 5, The Last Starfighter, even in 1993 Jurassic Park.

And as this Console will be a PC inside . :) Still on subject.
Will you get it? I mean it is nostalgia for me. Brings me back to my childhood. I love that they keep to the look we all remember.

I'm registering for updates at the ataribox site but haven't made up my mind yet about the new console. Really missed out on the Amiga & Atari during their heyday - hope this one is worth it. CNet video below with a little bit more detail on the new Atari creation.
