Really curious about players' combat experiences. Please reply here with:

    How many hours/week you play:
How frequently you die: (x/hour or x/encounters)
What your adventure level is ( see /stats)
What skull-level your typical encounters are (e.g., 3-skull scenes)

Obviously this isn't a thread relevant to all the Grand-Masters (GMs) who plow through all the 5-skull scenes. This is more for the early/mid gamers in the game, and myself. I'm wondering if my adventure-level (38) and being killed nightly in 3-skull scenes, but being usually safe in 2-skull scenes, is typical or not. Who knows -- maybe I'm horribly misaligned with my armor/spells/weapons mix...

yes you are doing just fine.

The metric you really need to watch is if your exp is maintaining going up or down with the skills you have set to train , maintain / unlearn.

If oyu are losing exp during your adventure and not dying you are fighting critter to low for you .

If you are maintaining your pool and killing efficiently but every soft often have overreached then you are GtG.

If oyu are just losing exp and dying then oyu need ot go find easier critters.

Also add me Grumpie Weinie, and if oyu see me on hit me up I will happily take oyu out and help you kill harder critters and get boosts to your exp while training. There are man y others out there who will do the same.

12 hours. I die an average of 3 times a week. Adventurer level 96. Tier 5 scenes only. When I was at a lower level like yourself, I died frequently to archers and mages. The way I eventually overcame that was with more strength (health) through innates, and with more defensive skill development.

I often wonder if I'm dying too frequently. My adventuring XP hovers between 18k-30k in recent weeks. I try the 3-skull scenes but quickly get creamed. Usually. It's a real challenge to just stay alive through a single encounter, and then bail. I play about 5hr/week.

Yup. Those guys suck. At this point I'm doing archery mixed with a bunch of fire spells as my primary, while exploring melee with a long sword and shield. Leather armor. Melee can be fun at times with fire, mixed with stealth and sneak attackā€¦ But doesn't suffice against crowds.

I'm about level 60 wearing full plate and using a two handed sword. Add in life, light and earth magic.
I stay in a 4 skull zone (Serpent Spine Foothills) because there are no archers or mages there. I rarely die there. The last time was when I was attacked by two fighters, two large timber wolves, a regular timber wolf and a large grizzly bear all at the same time.
I tried out Upper Tears today which is the same map, but has Archers and Mages. I was almost slaughtered there by three mages and a fighter. I really hate archers and mages.

Boy do I hear you. When I have them figured out, especially the tough plains 'hardened' skeletons overworld encounters, I sure am going to relish it.

Level 87 .... Some days i die twice but most none. Depends on what i am doing. If i am going out with the intent of dieing i really don't care. considering the loss of xp diminishes with each death. When i am hunting i never die. I've gone 3 weeks with out a death.

    (edit)

I suppose i should put it in the same format as everyone else

How many hours/week you play: 20ish hours
How frequently you die: 0-2 times week.
What your adventure level is: 87
    What skull-level your typical encounters are: R12 - 8 Zones. R12 = 12 skull (yes they go above 5)

I never die to mobs when i hunt. I die when i party with friends and we do stupid, i mean courageous things together lol. Like Slaying level 130?!? demons... no one really knows what level the demon in the fall is yet. It's still red to Sara ....

I only die if i go explore a new place and arent prepared.
Normally if i know what i fight i dont die and i always have a Escape Plan.
I would say i died 2 or 3 Times the last 4 Weeks, while playing
10-15 hrs a week, but only 5-8 hrs a week adventuring.

Level 80 at 12 to 16 hours weekly with two or three deaths a play period. But I push it hard in melee in five skull areas taking on ranged mob groups of two to three almost nonstop when I hunt. I'm not being dainty amidst the undead. Nor am I sweating XP pool loss. I'd probably quit the day I feel I can't have melee fun for fear of decay.

How many hours/week you play: 4-6 hours
How frequently you die: Once a week.
What your adventure level is: 69
What skull-level your typical encounters are: 4 skull and 5 skull. I never die when I'm in a skull level 4 scene. Having said that, I'm not really gaining xp either. It's always when I end up in a 5 skull scene that I end up getting killed.

I can absolutely identify with the OP - been there, done that. It seems like a long, slow grind at mid levels, and perceived gains are small. But I do think you're doing OK. As @Weins201 says, if your XP pool is gradually climbing, you're fine.

    At present: Estimate 15 - 20 hrs/week
Dying - not often. Usually when overconfident or underprepared
    • Returning home, forest siege, no blessings active, didn't buff up, but let's have a go at this anyway.....
    • K'rul and The Fall can't be THAT bad to explore solo....
    • Died a few times last weekend while getting used to a new (locked) deck
With new (bone) armour and using a locked deck I have definitely stepped up.
Adv level 87. With Spirituality blessing, playing as 91.
Skull level - 5. Favourite areas - Crag Foothills and Deep Ravenswood.
