Hey, been having prob consistantly with all the patches up till now (been playing for about 3-4 months ish) ive had continuous freezing in towns and memory leaks well after an hour or so where the locking up / freezing gets worse and worse until i have to restart the client. ive since updated my device drivers for everything under the sun to no avail improvements.
Below is my system information which for this game should definately be MORE Than enough to run it...so im not sure exactly whats causing this... :/

Yikes, that sounds bad. Have you attempted a full reinstall of the game in case there is some file corruption contributing to your issues?
Good call on the drivers update. I noticed you were on DirectX 11 - any reason why you are not using DirectX 12?
With the memory leaks - how does your task manager look after an hour of playing? I could see perhaps a memory leak happening after several hours, but your symptoms seem extreme.
To help narrow things down, have you tried different video settings? Do you not notice any performance changes between fastest and higher settings?
The freezing, how frequent is it? Do you get any error messages?

We can also look into your anti-virus programs in case it is bogging down SoTA. I take it Shroud is whitelisted in your firewall settings?

the hitching / locking up seems to happen whenever im in towns or POT's, any other time like if im in a dungeon or an adventure zone it runs like butter...as for the memory leak, it goes from (initially 5 gig usage then attempts to go well over the 8 gig cap). tried a reinstall to no avail as did i try to restart my entire machine any time it happens. shroud is whitelisted on firewall and anti-virus as well, typically i have very minimal things running in the background, discord and the game are it typically when gaming. @Lexie

I wouldn't bet my life on it, but the performance may be upped a bit by upgrading to the current Directx 12.

What AV software are you running? As a test - have you tried disabling 'realtime scanning' or whatever your running's equivalent, or excluding the shroud installation directory from it?

Also - your system RAM is a little low (8GB) IMHO - POTs often have a LOT of decoration items, which is probably why you are seeing the performance hit there only.

    - I think you would see a tremendous performance increase by going to 16 GB. In the meantime, you can try closing any other running programs, including those running in the background - to free up additional RAM.

PS - on my current Windows 10 system (windows 10 uses some memory compression too, so, this will not be directly comparative to win 7) -- I'm at ~6.5 GB used by SOTA after loading into Ulfheim, exiting to the world map, running through a siege into Rift's End, walking by a few houses, teleporting to Bladewyke and walking around..

the AV software is irrelevant because its never running when im gaming. also any other game i throw at my rig and theres zero issues at all... i can run fallout 4 and doom 2016 on high/ultra high settings with NP at all...

I think it's really a lack of available RAM - due to how much deco is loading in POTs - do you have 'cull interior decorations' enabled in options? That might help.

I have had this same problem for more than a year. Whenever the game load assets into pc/gpu memory it needs to perform some processing and unpacking, it uses system RAM as a buffer for this work. This is how many games handle loading compressed/packed assets. But, most other games will release the massive buffer chunks as soon as they are no longer needed. This game does not handle this simple cleaning up correctly, and so suffers from stuttering and other issues as it consumes an unnecessary amount of memory.
It has been an issue for me when I play this game for more than a year now. At first I thought it was an issue with just my platform, but I have seen complaints from other players that run it one Windows who have been seeing the same issue. These complaints go back for over a year as well.

I find it very disappointing that the developer has not the technical capability to solve such a simple issue.

I think a tiny bit of the problem is the engine itself, I play a game called rust which also uses unity and it seems to be a similar problem with most if not all unity based games, I think as of now a lot of it is patiently waiting the hotfix from unity devs. I'm sure something can also be done by portal to atleast put a bandaid on the problem , but that's about all it'd be is one large bandaid.

I hate to sound like a pessimist but, depending on who you ask, they have had more than 2 years to figure this one out. I can think of many different situations that could lead to a dev with as much gravitas as Portalarium not being able to fix this... but most of them involve them being terrible at managing the project. Given the fact that I bought the game, I really hope I am wrong about that. Based on what I have seen over the last 3 years, Mr. Garriot is really, really good at selling his product... but they are not nearly as good at delivering.

@Echondas That's good to know, I suppose. But what does that mean?

I like the Neuromancer EOA Game cover art, by the way. Haven't seen that in years.

Awesome - you’re the first person who recognized it :)

@Chris - is Chris Spears AKA Atos (SOTA in reverse) - he’s the head wizard in this project - and wears many hats - I tagged him to see this thread and provide some feedback based on what’s been mentioned.

Up your Windows Virtual Memory, or your Windows Cache. I had mine turned off. When I turned it back on, all my issues fixed.

Hah - that was my first thought also - that he had paging turned off - but I saw in the system report that he had plenty of virtual memory free. I really think a RAM upgrade is needed.

Yeah its not the VM ... idk ...just seems really strange to me that this game requires so much ram when im playing other games with 8gigs with zero issues <_<
