You would think worrying about new people posting threads about the same things people were debating 2 years ago would be worth worrying about.

I think atm you hit close to 60 just for completing the main story quests. Minus all the sidequests.

@TheBalance i agree that imbalance in builds is the main cause for the apparent power gap. I just find too many posts where the person percieves the level gap as the issue rather than skill balancing

Are they supposed to wipe the game every six months for the rest of its life so new players won't feel the pressure of veteran players?
This is really a moot point. It only applies to the very first few months of a games release, then someone will have played every waking hour and be GM+Infinity and untouchable.

Breathe in Deep, Make a Character and Enjoy the game. Its really not as hard as it first appears to become a viable Avatar in the game.

umm, question to the original poster.....

Aside from partaking in PVP, how exactly is other people being higher level than you going to affect your game? You still have to gain XP to increase your skill. You still have to grind mobs and harvest resources to gain XP/levels. You still need to go through the same process that the current high level people have already gone through. How exactly is resetting everyone's character going to make your game play better? And, might I add, with a wipe, all add-on store items revert to their original owners...which means that people that paid real money after persistence to buy someone's add-on store items would lose those items.

if you log into another MMO, do you immediately quit because there are higher level characters than you?

As there is no defined victory condition for Shroud of the Avatar, people define their own.

If the OP's personal victory condition is contingent on starting from 0 at the same time as everyone else, and didn't get involved with the game at persistence, then he has a legitimate issue with the game... It doesn't fit his play style and is a poor fit for what derives him pleasure.

We don't have to understand it, just accept it. It's just as valid as anyone else's personal victory condition.

Nope. Me and a friend both started toons almost exactly the same time. Ran into each other and pretty much all we did was the three core quests and I did him the tour and visit the devotionals quest. We did a couple of hours just outside shuttered eye

Last night I took a toon I had just completed solace bridge outskirts on and stopped did the 3 core quests last night he’s about the same. That first toon has 1.2M xp pool it’s crazy the second one is near 900k

As a noob where most skills you want are still going to 40. Death is irrelevant the most annoying part is running back to where you were. And with 600k alone from just the final acts of each quest xp is raining from the sky. That last toon has NEVER grouped or pretty much spoken to anyone not an npc. He only has the gear he made or bought from npcs. I think he died a lot doing some of love Armor (no gloves) but despite imho love being the only real one where you repeatedly go in zones which are wave above your level who want to kill you he’s done them all by himself.

Was there death a few times? Sure. Swearing? Definitely. But all 3 done last night between about 4pm and midnight. Including some glitches, dinner and waiting on the lazy npc crew at etc who seem to sleep 15 hours or more a day!

Little too much hyperbole. I felt there should have been a final wipe at launch, but it's also not uncommon to have higher level characters running around when coming into a game that's been persistent for awhile.

I like that they are giving extra XP to help boost new players getting started. I can understand the frustration of being a "newbie", but we all gotta start somewhere.

Also, as pointed out, "winning" at an MMO is more a self-determined goal. Different strokes for different folk.

That's the best point. There is no winning. I am now lvl 102 and will have 35 GM's by tonight. I have a normal work and family life and play when I can. There are hundreds of people vastly farther then I am. People who hit lvl 110 in the first 2 months. But remember, that xp curve is almost exponential so while I might have 150 mil XP, they have 500 mil xp and 150 GM's. It took me a year and a half to get my 150 mil xp, it took them 2 months. I have no idea how high these people are now... lvl 140 with a billion xp?

So upon release, using the OP reasoning, I should just quit because there are so many vastly more powerful people playing.

But... in life I realized this long ago, there is always someone better, smarter and stronger then me in the world period. Its a flaw of human nature that comes out in video games that which I used to use a lot, especially when it came to UO. Every UO player thought they were the best UO player :) (especially in hindsight).

    Of course there is winning.
My winning, however, will not be the same as your winning, which will not be the same as @HoustonDragon's winning, which will not be the same as @liz_the_wiz's winning, which will not be the same as @Whiskiz's winning.
All the winnings are equally valid.

The only possible way to be "fair" would be to wipe the game every time a new character was created. Of course that would destroy the game much faster than accepting that people who have played longer have progressed further and are thus more powerful.

Im not sure what I'd think of as winning..

I felt like I won when I got my royal pest controller title, I felt a gain like Id won when I bought my town.. the day theres a "bunch" of people who live in it who arent people I know Id probably feel like I won too.. cos secretly *I* touched all their lives..

TBH my idea of winning is finding bugs and seeing them fixed. I played purely on test in eq (I was also the guild bugfinders there too) and the multiple incarnations of me are almost purely there as bug testing potentials.. and right now 12 me's isnt enough! I need throw away me's I need half way done here me and more done at that me...

One of the main reasons Lana pretty much has 80 at everything (bar specialisation obviously) is cos how could I look for bugs in skills I didnt have.. so she had all of them.

How many new players of other MMOs are alienated because there already exists high level characters? Your arguments are bunk. Either play the game or don't.

It is true that new players have to deal with the fact that there will always be veterans. People still like to start on a level playing field and that is why you see those vanilla and progressions servers pop up. Everquest is now releasing one every 6 months or so. Off course the level playing field does not exist for more then a few hours, with people hitting cap in 2 days, but still. :)

What bothers me in Sota is the huge amount of goods that have already entered the game through the veterans. Dozens of player-vendors(if not hundreds) that are packed with goods. I feel the Economy is kinda borked from the start. But that may still level out.......if the game would actually draw enough players to rekindle the Economy.

Unfortunately the game is not fun enough for that.

This is like saying the game will not be playable for a new player a year from now. Makes no sense. Everyone starts at level 0, then you quest, advance through zones, etc. Its not a race.

The OP has points. These points were apparently beat to death when the decision was made to never wipe again(seriously, think about that). But what is also apparent now is that there is a slice of people that will never play this game cause of that decision. It just is what it is. Given persistence basically funded this game I don't see any alternative even looking backwards.

I agree with this in theory, but there are many mechanics in this game that push for fast leveling. Many people feel like they are helping players level. I feel like its good to assist them adventuring through areas but I do not like powerleveling. It takes away from the game to skip over content just to be on top. This game is a sandbox and there really is no endgame content to race to. Whats left after you get to the top except grind and decay?

Not really. Because it never really stopped. Since persistence, there's been random new people showing up every month or two and thinking they were the first to come up with the idea that a wipe would be a good thing. Meanwhile, many of the rest of us went through wipe after wipe and were sick of it, plus they needed to establish an economy already, so they could tune it.
