Expansions are not free. You can pledge $165 and get physical media of the game (unknown media at this time). $140 pledge gets you all 5 games digital downloads.

Richard has mentioned that he wants people to be able to try the game for free, how that free trial will work is unknown. That might also apply to expansions.

Pretty sure you'd have to pay some serious extra shipping on that.. it'd take over 200 of those suckers... ;)

I love physical game boxes with the physical goodies inside. I don't think in today's age SotA will be in that form (not including the collector edition that is). It lost likely will be a direct download for the base game and expansions.

I thought I heard a rumor (Spooney roasts LB) about a box artist making art for this game... maybe I need to rewatch it.. but if that is the case then we might get a full boxed game and there isn't any reason they couldn't print up an extra several hundred or thousand that can be ordered for those collectors out there. Since this would be the full game I wouldn't expect it till end of October or possibly even later delivery. They are working on a tight schedule to get this game out in digital format, let alone physical.

^ Warning: thats just speculation there.. so not a real answer to OPs question.

I will be posting the Collectors Box on the Shroud of the Avatar Museum as soon as I get it later in 2014. Of course any non-collector physical editions that may surface will also be bought and put up too. :)

If they actually put a version on floppies, I'd be tempted to pay the shipping costs just for the humour factor.

From the EXPLORER tier (not the digital explorer):

    • Special Collector's Box
    • Recorded media game (format of recorded media TBD)
    • Recorded media game soundtrack (format of recorded media TBD)
    • Old-school style, illustrated, printed manual
So yes. The format will probably not be 5.25 floppies, but we WILL be receiving a physical version of the game. And thus one would assume that it will be for sale, as well.

Explorer is actually only $140 which gets you the physical game (or $120 if you were in early on KS).

You are Correct for the regular game from KS.

But Collectors like myself would purchase it on multiple disc formats. That is what we were drooling about for a little while. :D

My current copy of SotAInstaller.exe is 11,513,808 bytes.
Assume a 5 1/4 floppy has 140kB available (per side!)

    zip -9 -s 140k sota.zip SotAInstaller.exe

yields 79 separate files that can each be stored on a floppy (or 40 double-sided floppies) [Mac OS X 10.8.5]

It's only the installer, and you would have to copy each one to your computer and unzip the data into the original SotAInstaller.exe then go through the normal setup process. But it could be done. You do still have a floppy drive around right?

Someone had mention an ankh shaped yubikey for use as added account security. We could have an ankh shaped USB drive with the installer, patcher, torrent files, all the large data files from those torrents, and all the digital goodies that are available all on a single media device, all with the most up to date data available at time of manufacture.

So both the floppies and the ankh USB drive.

What I'd like to know is how many tapes/hours would you need if SoTA was released on Cassette. That's one format I don't miss . ;)

I thought about that as well. Those go back to my first computer that had any "storage" capabilities... the Colecovision ADAM which had a few games on cassette as well as a BASIC cassette and a Data Pack cassette to store the programs coded in BASIC. I had a TI 99 4A as well, but I did not have the memory cartridge to store things, so anything done in the included TI BASIC was lost at the end of the day.

Who needs physical disks, Do like GoG does, just installer files with everything downloaded and backup on your local drives and backup systems.
I prefer GoG to Steam for just that reason.

...or maybe they'll put it on a USB drive emblazoned with the SOTA logo. I wonder if we'll get a choice of format...
