I understand it if an NPC notices me stealing something and calls me out, but a cat??? If you do this please make the NPCs kill cats again.

A few more comments on thieving.
    1. If NPCs (or cats or cows) tell me to put something back, you should make it possible for me to do so.
    2. It is not clear whether the Oracle knows you have stolen even if you are not caught. Can you clarify?
3, The Music Merchant must see me when I take some apples from a crate that is lying about in Aerie, but she never mentions it. Will an NPC always chastise you if they see you stealing something?

We absolutely need the ability to put an object back.

That is too funny! I think it should be possible still because that is way too funny. (Sorry thieves) But if Portalarium is going to go that far, I would say that not all NPC cats would care if players stole something. If the dev team wanted to go even further in the weeds they could make it possible to distract cats and guard dogs by feeding them. Then you have to worry about jerk players poisoning them. Let's just fix that by applying severe karma penalties to PVP. LOL just kidding.

And here I thought cats talking was the problem but you just don't like talking cats that bust you stealing! :)

She knows, trust me, she knows.
The un-virtuous act is seperate from getting caught.
Also, RG doesn't want the fog lifted so you won't get any such indication.

If you check the standup and release notes one can see that "improved theft detection" is not implemented in many towns. But as they do NPC polish that is added as well.
And again, getting caught or not does not matter for your karma, the act itself is what counts. So even if not implemented yet miss clackityclack will still tell Santa you should get coal in your stocking.
    :p

All that talk about can't have guards because blah blah blah - convert all these useless annoying cats to NPC Guards and BAM - guards in cities. Everybody wins.

I can sort of accept a talking cat, but a cat that cares if you steal something that doesn't belong to it? Preposterous!

Until all items are placeable you should be able to trade the item back to the NPC that spots you picking it up.

I think it is a bit much.
Yesterday I was in an NPC building and there were some sacks on the ground. I clicked on them as usual to see what was in them. (I never take anything, just curious).
Only problem, one of the sacks was a sack of grain. When I clicked it, it disappeared into my inventory.

The guard came up and looked at the spot where the sack was sitting then looked at me.

I guess that was 'strike one'

I tried to put it back but it won't go.

Cats are the advanced organic versions of Oracle watchers.

Watch how they walk up to you and 'scan'

My cat would defiantly yell at you and should though he prefers to write long winded letters while hopped up on focus potions. ;)
