Now that the default action of drag is one at a time and requires shifting and adjusting the slider to take a stack a take scraps button would be handy so the tool is left in place, this would be especially helpful when salvaging lots of items.

Or allow scraps to remain and still salvage another item.

Found a flow that works better than shift dragging, filter to the tool & order by durability.

    10 Drag Smithing Hammer
    20 Drag Item
    30 Click Salvage
    40 Click Take All
    50 GOTO 10

That was flagged as a bug in QA testing. I think there was actually a build where it had been corrected, and then it reverted to being broken in the subsequent versions.

And I agree, it is incredibly annoying. :)

I scrapped a few rusties today, and my workflow was to start by dragging the hammer in. Then drag an item and click salvage. Note that at this point, all the resulting scraps are selected! It just takes one drag to put them back in your inventory. Then drag in a new rusty and repeat.

Maybe we need a button that says "Take All Except Tools", ha ha.

I was more annoyed that the inventory window items were NOT SORTED AT ALL, nor could I see how to select an item category such as Equipment or Crafting. Even books and ~notes~ were sorted randomly. Clicking on "Name" at the top changed the random sorting order of the inventory window into another useless order. I suppose I could have typed "Rusty" into the filter, but you can salvage some non-rusty stuff, too.

Aye, that works when the salvage results in more than one type of item.

Could the weight of scraps be adjusted. It seems weird that I can take a 4 weight weapon and get back 25 weight of scraps. so far i'm seeing returns of 2, 4, 17, 25 from rusty weapons and my salvage skill is only 19 or so.

Also in line with the above questions and crafting in general. Could you just not make the finished product move to our inventory, it would save a lot of extra clicking when salvaging.
