4. Details: I crafted a simple wooden mailbox and can't seem to place it on the ground or a wall.

you can't ever put anything on greenhouse walls, and the mailbox has to go on a wall. you need a house.

 

I've hung bows, lamps and all the grand tour hats on the outside of the greenhouses.

Hmm, maybe there could be another recipe that adds a couple of boards to make a stand for the mailbox, I don't have a house on my lot at this time.

 

then that's a new effect of the work they've done this release to let you hang the new placeable armor and weapons on both walls and floors. try hanging a painting on a greenhouse wall

It is true, right now a mailbox does need a house. I would consider this productive feedback, but not technically a bug at this time. I definitely understand where you are coming from

 

For now a work around is to place one in the basement.

 

Hm. Heaving a House seems not enough... Elven Globe Home here... No Mailbox possible there at all.
And at the Airship it is possible... but not at very intuitive places.
