   I made a ring with the new recipe under the smithing tree, and tried to masterwork it. For 7 or 8 consecutive attempts, the masterwork failed but the item was not destroyed. I placed a normal piece of armor on the bench and the masterwork process completed as I would have expected.
   
   edit: masterwork not mastercraft
