The difficulty here is that this game is not an MMO. It's a selective multi-player game with a single player mode. Therefore each class needs to be balanced for both party combat, single combat, PvP combat, and PvE combat. It's quite a task and the dev team is going to have to break some molds to get there, because the "traditional" ways aren't balanced for this new dynamic.

Not to say you don't have valid points, just that we have to look at everything with a brand new paradigm.

Yes single player does present it's challenges but I'm not sure that the answer is either in reagents or making all classes equal at all levels. It could just be that some classes progress slower at some levels than other. Another option is if you insist on never playing with others, some of the classes are just harder than other classes.

I have to disagree with that sentiment. I don't want to be penalized just because I don't like multi-player. I can only hope the devs agree with me about that. :p

The archer cannot shoot arrows without arrows. I heard they might be thinking that bows don't wear out or something. That might offset the material used, but it doesn't allow them to still use "air arrows" to do light damage in the same fashion that thier combat style worked. Magic users should do nothing other than make sparkles and a light show without reagents.

If a warrior is reduced to punching after his weapon is badly damaged, a mage should be reduced to punching without reagents... then also an archer can be reduced to punching without arrows. That is the most fair answer.

exactly! This is a good reason to not start a feature creep. Once you start giving bonuses to one class, then more stuff will have to be added to another class. Then something gets nerfed. then again something gets added for another class. Its a perilous path to travel. Best stay with the basics and just balance the classes without giving something to one individual class.

Classes ? What is this you speak of ?

    ----

Attempting to handle all variations in the same manner simply leads to a watered down set of skills which don't have any intrinsic benefit over the other.

Perhaps what should be asked is : What makes a user who uses a Bow different from one who uses range Magic instead ?

So, a character with archery is the only variation that has the chance of running out of ammunition ? But they also have no impediment when wearing armor, something that cannot be said for magic users.

A pure melee fighter has no ammunition concerns ? Well they also have no range capabilities either.

A mage does not really require reagents to tap into their magical reserve ? Well, they are less efficient when doing so, and cannot use armor effectively.

Seems the devs have some thoughts already laid out regarding how to balance the extremes.

I'm certainly interested in seeing how it all falls together. :)

That's why archers typically carry a sword (or some other sort of melee weapon) with them for backup o_O

ok there are no "classes" then how would you define a person who would only want to use the archery tree? and how would soft breakage of archery/arrows be balanced with the soft breakage sword and the soft breakage reagents?

Obviously, you can "simulate" the traditional roleplaying classes based on skill selection, but quite frankly I don't know why any player would not want to have some sort of competence in both melee and ranged combat. Heck, even a ranged specialist like a mage will use his staff for melee! (At some point, your foe will close the distance!) So why wouldn't an archer carry a melee weapon as well?

that is not the question. you are evading the answer because you have no answer. your theory is flawed fundamentally. answer the question and prove me wrong. don't change the premise. how would you define a person who would only want to use the archery tree? and how would soft breakage of archery/arrows be balanced with the soft breakage sword and the soft breakage reagents?

with the "soft" breakage of their bow. The string becomes less taut and the arrows strike with less force == less damage == just like the other two "classes" that are not classes.

Most archers in medieval armies were hybrids. So what?

I am well aware that multi-disciplinary combat is how it actually works in the real-world. There are some users though that don't appear to understand that aspect.

My apologies if you missed the punchline though. :)

It depends, again, on how effective a mage can be casting without reagents. We don't know that yet. If it isn't a problem, that is an imbalance. If casting without reagents is the last gasp before dying, I don't think it will be a big deal. The archer can start punching. I hope that will be every bit as effective as a mage casting without reagents.

I am pathologically literal. If there was a punchline there somewhere, I most definitely missed it.
