Control Points

    Ok, I've been running all over the map trying to get to Aerie.

    I have gone through a few control points, I just run through them one side to the other if I die I just try and get to the otherside as a ghost.

    I'm trying to figure out what they are for, other then just a combat zone?

    Are they forced pvp?

    What benefit do they add to the game?

    Will death penalties be enough to not want to just float through the zone?

    They're there simply to prevent you from easily moving from one part of the map to another.

    It's supposed to support regional economies. I personally don't see how that all ads up to fun.

    i assumed it was for keeping a seperate economy in each area so you would need to pay to transport items. That is useless though like you say if you can ghost there for free anyway. In my opinion once you die in a control point zone you should instant respawn at the gate you entered at so that you can't do that.

    In the future, the control points will be more dynamic and meaningful. One example would be if players took over the control points and you no longer had to fear for your life, you could just move through them via the overworld map. No muss no fuss.

    But eventually you'll not be able to run through the control point and just die without losing something. The monsters will take your stuff and use it. You'll be looted. So you may not want to go through there unless you can fight them or sneak past them. Which makes the regional economy "work".

    So will they be PVP zones? Or just combat zones?

    How will this work for people doing lot selection?

    Why can't I get a boat from any port city to any other port city? This doesn't make much sense.

    I don't see how losing my stuff makes the game more fun. I also don't see people manning the control point. That may happen for a short time and then that'll be it.

    Happy to answer these questions for.

    Some PVP control points have been mentioned, but none are currently in the game and it's unclear where those might be. No one will be forced to go into a pvp zone to complete the main story line.

    In lot selection people get to log into the game even when it's not their turn to pick a lot. So they can literally login and camp out at the lot they want if they so choose (and in single player mode if they want). Yes they will have to navigate the game including control points, but they should have plenty of time to do this - just like everyone else in the game.

    You can't get a boat form one port to another because they aren't working on boats until POST WIPE.

    Control points are one of the (very few) things that I very much dislike in SotA.

    Hmmm....

    They need to get rid of the current teleport boats.

    I'm torn on how I feel about these zones...they look neat and I can see there could be some adventure there. I just don't understand the road bump feature.

    Ok, feedback noted.

    The system is incomplete. I just watched the original kickstarter video again today and I would say your comment falls under the "we're not going to hand hold players" mantra that LB talked about. All monsters will try to loot you in this game, so get used to that it's a major feature.

    It's mainly about the regional economy. I love the concept, it's annoying right now, I agree.

    But what you'll find Rune, the more you play this game, is that the developers have a TON of work to do. I would say that the control points are still really 1st iteration stuff here. The concept is good, I like it a lot. But the implementation needs a lot of work and that's going to take a lot of time.

    So, making the game aggravating and un-fun is simply not "hand holding".

    I wonder weather we will get charged for boat travel too because otherwise people will just use boats to bypass the control points . i like boats in the game if it is worked right.

    I never played WoW, never. Thought that was the dumbest looking worst excuse for a game I'd ever seen. I'd never try it, I don't want anything to do with it.

    But 12 million people were playing it at one time! One man's fun is another man's dumbest game ever.

    I think control points look like fun. Very non-WoW to me.

    IMO if guilds could actually meaningfully have control over the control points and charge people a (small) toll for passage, it would give meaning to them. People who don't want the toll could try to fight their way through if they wanted, while people who paid the toll would be guaranteed passage. But some PvErs have fought against this. I think its a much better solution than the teleport mage, which I think is silly.

    To me, its RP > all , and that's the best RP solution imo for control points.

    It was interesting the first couple times. Now it's annoying and not fun. FWIW, I never played WoW.
