So over the course of teh past few days I've picked up a few letters and scraps of information.

How can I determine if it is used in a quest versus trash I accidentally picked up?

For example I have 2 letters:

    From Johan
    From Johan to Hobart

Occasionally I notice when I am at a vendor that one of the two might be able to be sold. The other cannot. Is this the way to figure out i something is essential to a quest or is there another way?

Quest items are normally yellow in your inventory and cannot be sold.
Maybe some are bugged and not flagged properly.

Some rewards are unique items and people accidently sold or salvaged it.
There was a thread about it recently.

And be cautious to not sell or salvage expensive gear what is masterworked and/ or enchanted.

We ask to be able to flag items as non sell- and salvagable for some time now, because many people lost some expensive or hard worked gear this way.

Anything you just happened to pick up can be reacquired since they'll respawn. So I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you think you have an active quest that might use it.

I've also wondered about some of the quest-like items and notes that were cluttering up my inventory. To be on the safe side I carry a small bag labeled "Quest Items" in my inventory and dump all those questionable things in it.

I had a quest bag until items labelled as 'quest' items could not longer go in containers. At least one of my characters has a 'keys' bag. Been too lazy to make more. :)
