if you're around a hostile mob (bright green/yellow/orange/red nameplate) or a neutral one (pale green nameplate) and you put that circle down near them, they should come over to investigate it. it's easy enough to train in towns if you can find, say, a flock of sheep to distract.

    Hey @LadyGreywolf ,

The Distract skill has a few things newer players can have a problem or incomprehension about :

    1. You need to make sure you set it to "Training". When you open the skill window (K by default), you can go to the subterfuge tree and make sure it has a green arrow pointing up!

    2. This skill only affects 1 NPC at a time, and you can't chose which (obviously being precise with your targeting can help selecting a target).

    3. The range early levels is very short and can risk you being discovered.

    4. NPCs can be slow to react to it sometimes.

Once you manage to play with all those things, it is a very fun skill to use! But be sure you did set it to training, and practice using it in a town full of people, it will give you more chances of it affecting an NPC and will train it faster.

So, basically, the Distract skill is worthless.

I had a guildmate who would bait an Aether Corpion to fight dragons for him by using Distract. Wouldn't call it worthless, just not as useful as you could imagine, but it has some worth for lower level players or those with a specific style.

I used it a ton to pull mobs away from harvesting nodes when my avatar had no fighting skills to speak of.

I still think that it's not very useful. Especially if it was nerfed to only work on one mob.
