Huh.. what? He's saying that on 70K backers only a few are actually playing the game. Why is that ? Sure they already paid for the game, but those backers who are not playing the game, they're also not buying anything in the online store. ( we're losing money here..)
But if the game was really good, those people would still be around, spending real money for cosmetic or anything else in store.

Acquiring one whale is worth more than a thousand or more regular players. That's why they advertise on Facebook, they want big spenders that haven't played a modern MMO.

The game is going not going away. Funding determines how much gets added but even if a small budget has slowed progress down imo the last month's then so be it. The last months have really brought a large amount of amazing and interesting things into the game. This game still offers much to do and allows us to use our imagination with many tools we've been given.

Of course I'm hoping we finish systems already in game before moving on to others. This game is my virtual home.

We have many basics to build upon and this is the type of game I want to play and see flourish. Focusing on bare bone systems such as fishing, agriculture, cooking and having fun battle grounds.

Even as a Pve player I have to admit I liked wintergrass in the game wow. I would love to see an interesting concensual large scene perhaps faction oriented area we can go if we are in the mood with daily quests and more like take the banner or flag in various parts of a large area. That could be fun with no ransom, decay etc. Personally I'm not interested in taking a castle but for those who are of course I wish that for them. We need things for many styles of play.

I truly believe we will win. This game has a lot to offer now. We just need to focus and finish things we start. Stop adding in incomplete systems and waiting years hoping they will get finshed with them. Like fishing for example. Perhaps you're not a fisherman but still it's been years. So many possibilities to add to the game and later deep sea fishing, sea monsters, and sea battles would truly add so much.

So we can speculate for years or stand behind our game getting things done. I have been here since 2013 and plan to stay fighting for a game I believe in.

When I go in game I am extremely busy working on my concert hall and theater, keeping my vendor stocked, playing with others exploring and hunting together, syncing songs with others and so much more.

It's not all roses. We still need things done but it is a special world that has been made here. We need to champion for it to get what it needs or walk away. I believe this world will offer eventually something special for so many of those looking for their very own virtual world.

My worry is they need around $150,000+ per month in operating costs plus more to actually make profit and there's still a long way to go to finish what they've started. If this was a complete game, or at least the systems in place they have spoken about, then I wouldn't worry as much. But $150,000+ per month in expenses is a lot.

Even the big AAA studios slim the personnel between projects/ deliverables, expansions; its just the industry. And these are millions-of-copies-sold type titles. The motivation isn't entirely financial.
And it isn't just gaming, and it isn't just software - laying off specialists between major projects, where their expertise is not required when you shift into a maintenance phase, happens in many industries. This doesn't mean that you're not going to need them again someday, it just means you don't pay those salaries during months where they aren't necessary. It sucks, absolutely, but it isn't a crisis or a sign of the apocalypse. If anything it means they are looking at spending funding responsibly.

The key difference here is the relationship between the developers and the community - we know their names, we've made friends with them, they're real people to us. I can rattle off a couple dozen Sota developers off the top of my head. I couldn't tell you the name of a single person who works for any other big studio despite hundreds/thousands of hours spent in their games.

That would be true of a completed game. This game still needs a lot of work which will be harder to complete now that half the team is gone.

Oh, I have been around. What does my post count have to do with the fact that the game is now running on empty? I did not care about the money I spent at the time. What I do care for is the drastic nonsense that has gone on throughout the development cycle. The game has launched and heck we do not even have our backer physical items yet.
What about he bugs that have been around forever ( cloak clipping bug anyone?)
I loved UO. This game is NOTHING like UO. This is a cash grab. Period. It started off like it was going to be great, but then you had way to much favoritism, under handed tactics shady things going on behind the scenes etc... It was not just the slow and lacking development that is and has brought this game to it's knees, it's bad management. All I can say to those who said we could care less about the money we might lose is this and old saying. A fool and his money are soon parted. Sad but true.

After playing with my friends and family we too had decided to leave. I played Ultima Online at launch and for years after and had hoped this game would compare but it did not. Even though I advanced my skills to 100 and specialized I really didn't feel much more powerful. I don't like spending so much time doing something that is meaningless in the end. What really made me even more sad is to be able to farm like many of the videos show I had to basically be a caster. If I chose melee or Archer I was basically sol. Another thing is the system requirements to play this game, now I have more than the recommended hardware but seriously, the graphics and gameplay are not good enough to warrant the system requirements. Many times I was grouped we had to repeat a lot of quests as they would bug out or maybe it was only intended for a single player to do them, either way a lot of headache. Is this a mmopg or a single player game? Nothing special for owning a home, no free port to your house every 30 min, nothing except a place to store stuff or have crafters. This game had the right idea but sadly is far from finished and a majority of people won't wait in hopes of changes.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully you will find something closer to UO, or come back next year and give a second look. Most of these games evolve immensely after the first year.

As @redfish says, the game still has legs. Some fundamental things do need to change, however.

Well, to be fair, a certain, probably fairly large number of the OG kickstarter backers were *never* gonna play this game. Some people weren't gonna like it. Some people forgot about it.

And since we only have concurrent steam numbers, we don't know the unique number of total players, even tho, in all likelihood, it's not enough.

But you know - few MMOs that have better graphics and more money spent on them have that many concurrent players atm.
