Interesting quote from Richard:
What those two things have allowed us to do is, while most MMOs would take four years and $40 million minimum, we’re going to be able to do this in two years, head to tail.

So if we assume a start date of April 8 (end of KS), this would mean a potential target release of April 2015. Personally, I'd still say that's pretty aggressive.

As far as "Release" goes, it's kind of a relative term with a project like this. I mean in truth, Episode 1 might not be completed but that does not mean they could not stop wiping our characters, allow us to run around the world building up fortune and running small quests that do not pertain to the Main story-line. I mean if they have banks (I thought I heard a November release on that..) as a place to store things, even if we are not choosing our house plots it does not mean the game can't run 24x7. So I think it's possible we could see a Soft Release sometime in late December while still waiting for some of the other pieces to finish up.

Shroud is a much different model then other games, I can see why they might not want to call it a full release and start selling it as complete, but for those of us Backers who have already pledged, they don't really lose out on anything with a soft launch.

I mean sure, there might be calls of Unfair advantage, or unfair start, but really I think that ship has sailed. This is not a standard game, its a Crowdfunded game, and YES, the Backers have an advantage. Perhaps it's simply vanity items, perhaps some is monetary by selling off Founder items - but really, nobody is stopping anyone from putting in their $45 and joining in the fun. Housing placement could come 2 months later...and still follow the Lot Sequence method of placement. Everyone else who had opportunity to build up money would just place after the add-ons.

I mean games do Skill wipes all the time, it's just a reset, you still have everything you earned... You can give out "Make-over" coupons so people can take advantage of new character creation options. I think that whenever they felt comfortable enough that players no longer needed wiped they could do that. It's not like anyone is getting money back....we all paid up front...there is no subscription. "Going Live", at least for backers, is simply a mater of comfort that the Devs and community feel is right.

For those who don't know, my spouse Jess and I not too long ago began a webzine, GamerXP. on "the experience of being a gamer" - a couple of other SotA folks are also involved, most notably FireAngel as you may have noticed. The primary focus is on tabletop gaming, but we cover videogames and other aspects of gaming as well.

BTW, I think she has had the best write-up so far. She explains the game quite well.

 

No... She was a GM on a free UO shard, but known as Night, not a real name Otherwise, her writing credits have been almost completely offline.
