EA is currently gifting Ultima 8 Pagan on its Origin Store, as part of its 'On The House' deal.
It'll mean having to create an account and download EAs game manager (if you have'nt got it already) but worth checking out as its only free for a limited time.

Go to the main EA page, then Store, then 'On the House'

    Enjoy

Of the titles they choose to give away they choose Ultima 8? The one many die hard Ultima fans pretend never happened? EA never creases to not impress me.

Ultima 8 was the only Ultima that I didn't like/play. I started it umpteen times, because I really didn't want to skip an Ultima, but I couldn't make myself continue. I still have the original box somewhere...

Ultima VIII was a great game, jumping was the #1 reason many fans didn't like it, there's jumping in tons of RPGs today, jumping is a non issue, no companions, that was kind of the whole point. It was the darkest game I've ever played, sound-track-wise, plot-wise, graphics were crude but not at the time, the gore was extreme back then. It was a great game. I downloaded it off origin but no point, I already had a copy w/dosbox which is what you get if you download it today.

Jumping wasn't the problem, it was the arcadish gameplay of sinking and rising platforms and instadeath in shallow pools. But jumping and climbing added to the game in areas where it wasn't arcadish.. for instance, I enjoyed finding ways to sneak into locked buildings, and climbing cliffs and into valleys, and up from collapsed floors.

I enjoyed U8 far more than U9 in the end.

Jumping was the #1 issue, I was in #Ultima in 96, 97, and the #1 complaint was jumping. Ultima IX was horrible, let's face it, I beat Ultima IX in 3 days, it was the shortest fastest Ultima I've ever played, but I know it was due to being cancelled and un-cancelled, they rushed it before it was cancelled again. I'm re-playing Ultima VIII now, just don't make the same mistake I did, kill the Titans in the order you are supposed to. If you save the weakest TItan for the end you will have a big surprise, and won't be able to finish the game, unless they patched that issue, I doubt it.
