    Handed bridgets amulet to grannus, talked to mara, but its says in my journal I should talk to essen as well, but he wont talk to me.

    Same here, just tried it after a re-log as well. Not sure if its no longer an option 'if' you speak to Mara first...but it isn't at all clear, he just doesn't respond, as you say.
