Exactly... I run around with awesome armor, ring of the lich kind, warlock chain, sages sash, two +16 wands, death staff, etc... Risk of losing it? 0%

Oh... I accept the fact that there are people who feel as you do because... well... there you are. I just fully disagree with you and the super safe world that we play in here.

Hell... even the monsters in UO, after killing you, looted something from your cold corpse... If you wanted it back then you had to gear back up and go back in there and kill them for it. In this game, dying is simply risk-free and snooze like. If it had risk, even a little bit... we'd all think a little bit as we went forth into the world.

That is why I agree with what @craftymethod just said before me. Just a little bit of risk even. Try it Mikey, you'll like it!

I am happy that you can find various games to satisfy your wants & needs, at any given time.
    It's all good :)

I have devoted my time & money to Shroud, with the current rule-set.

I have no desire to be dragged into a PVP kind of game...
That isn't what Shroud was intended to be & if it had been going in that direction already or rumoured to be heading towards a more PVP-centric game?
I would never have invested what I have in it, nor even bothered downloading Shroud.

If Shroud, were to head in a PVP kind of direction?
I would be totally annoyed that I had wasted my hard earned dollars & my time...
But I would leave, in a heartbeat...

Consensual PVP = No problem (each to their own)
Forced PVP = Goodbye (& NO, I won't let the door hit me on my way out)

@Alleine Dragonfyre, I am glad you seek other games to satisfy your various wants & needs,
I am happy with Shroud & the direction it is taking to improve game-play (without changing Rule-sets) :)

Shroud is Shroud.... It is Not any other game...

All i am saying is that there is a balance between second life and Ultima Online.

Its not much of a game if 100% safety can be guaranteed all the time. Perhaps more PVE elements like I mentioned like rouge meteor strikes and roaming monsters in town to get some kind of tower defense mechanic. You get your house set up and you won't have to worry!

And get your stealth and you can creep around like avoiding zombies in dayz!

Better yet, pay the npc guards for an escort!

Doesnt that sound fun and emergent?

Perhaps 100% saftey should only be for new accounts and while you are on a lot? With the right PVE mechanics and skills, saftey could almost be gurenteed otherwise. Teleporting and carriage taxi's could bypass any in town risks that may occur. But if you went seeking that danger, it could be readily available to those that seek it?

    Just thinking out loud really.

    peace all ;)

Not really. Those things sound rather annoying. Town is my safe area. When I want danger, I go adventuring. And then I measure my risk by Tier of Scene I venture into and whether I go alone or with friends. Maybe for some super high leveled folks, there is no more danger in PvE, but I find myself coming into the occasional close call or even death if I get too confident about my abilities.

I don't want to play a game where I am always needing to be On Edge or Super Alert. That kind of game stresses me out. It isn't fun.

As much I like & respect you....
Well... Maybe not everyone is as over-powered/equipped as you are, in a game that "has only launched 6 months ago" & hasn't benefited from Years of Trial Runs while Shroud was in development?

This is the Shroud I signed up for at Release in March 2018...

Yes, on this I will agree with you... There should be a bit more "Risk-Reward" in Shroud.
But that shouldn't be the current ferocious Death/XP Penalty we have..

But something along the lines of what Shroud is advertised/promoted to be...

Man, AA would have been the PERFECT mmo. But it's the perfect example on how to take an overly popular game and destroy it, XL games makes no sense in that aspect. I'm still salty about that game failing as hard as it did, I played it more than any other mmo since UO.

It does have risk... there is a modest experience penalty on death... Yet to many, this is the most vile affront to gameplay imaginable.

I will accept open PvP in SotA when being a crafter allows me to exert the same kind of power over PvP players that being a PvP player in an open PvP game allows them to exert over me. And if they were to implement something like that, every single person advocating open PvP would suddenly forget all about the joys of "not always being perfectly safe".

SotA, BATTLETECH, Prey and Air Missions: HIND on a Saturday morning. I'm also flirting with Shadow Tactics a bit. Wait... What were we talking about?

I'm almost with you that the Death XP is a penalty... except it quickly drops to nothing. And XP/Stat loss can't be the only penalty/risk. Let me put it this way.. I'm a crafter, I make bows. I want to sell bows. In order to sell bows they have to be used/lost/destroyed/stolen. It is a natural progression of items in order to drive the demand for more of the items. But right now with out any of these risks, hampers the sale of bows. Risk is what drives demand.

Now I'm okay with some type of insurance system where we pay a fee to insure an item from being stolen. But to be honest, I want part of the that insurance fee to go back to he player that crafted that item.

I'm not talking about pure Felucca, full wide open PvP, full loot, full stealing. I'm talking about some balance between the two extremes. Right now, Portalarium has the game slanted/tilted way too much one way. I know this because there is absolutely no way I can lose any of my stuff, except some XP and that is limited too.

And BTW, @DarkStarr - here is a suggestion. Introduce 2x Loot for 1 day each month (2nd Saturday) but the catch is the entire world, all of Novia, every city, every PoT, every location is PvP. The only safe place is the overland map. Every 2nd Saturday is Bloody Saturday. Think of it like the Purge, except is once a month. And if Saturday is too much for the kiddies to handle then do the 2nd to last Thursday. Last Thursday is Release day... 2nd to Last Thursday is Thirsty Thursday! 12 days (non-weekend) out of 365... see what happens, it might surprise a lot of us.

Game is seriously stale. I log in to sell materials and pay rent. Sometimes run around PvP areas and never see anyone. Seriously blown away that people want 100% safe game. I didn't think that was the original intent of the developers considering their track record.

I'm a crafter. I mostly make furniture and other deco items.
My adventure level isn't that high; what I do have in adventure levels is almost all from fighting off mobs while trying to gather materials to craft.
My gear is not that great; I have no artifacts, except a Lute I got through a lucky supply bundle bag.

If I had to deal with open full PVP, I'd sell off my account and quit. Fighting isn't really my game, and to be griefed while trying to collect materials to craft would just be too frustrating.

My position is a little more nuanced, and perhaps a little more bizarre. I don't mind risk/loss (maybe we just get the eternal patterns back). What's unacceptable to me is the loss to other players. I won't feed griefing. Not everyone griefs, but I won't take that risk.

Some people ask for a separate server for PVP. I was actually thinking about a separate server for survival-mode (though with the same objections against it). No fast travel, food and water matter, and you can starve, etc.

Peoples cultist and pop culture fascination with devs on a games fascinate me at times, its almost a cult of personality for some people. I see them as no different then any employee in any company. They get hired, get paid for what they do and then they move on to other jobs. Game development is actually simpler then most people think and pretty strait forward. Game developers historically are some of the most abused employees in the IT industry, back in the 2000's even making a lot of news about their terrible work conditions (working 16 hours a day to make deadlines). To me, they are like any other human working a job, I wish them all the best like I would any one else. But to follow them around is weird to me (read how Neal Peart feels about the extremism with Rush fans, he doesn't get it). Lots of people dont like celebrity, let people live their private lives. A lot of the higher ups at Port have already suffered massive and HEAVY years of negative social engineering attacks from... those... usual people.

This fascinates me too. I'm just getting into games dev and to be honest, I'm scared.

Growing up in the pre-Agile days of the 80's and 90's, to me, reading about the id guys, Origin, Looking Glass, Microprose, Interplay, you name it... Man... The wizards at Sierra, Lucasarts... The flipping heyday of the scene. Command & Conquer... I couldn't fathom a cooler thing to be doing. But I was a child/teenager.

When you grow up and then it's your job, that magic may be diminished somewhat. It has to be, perhaps, for the likes of a serious actor for instance. Which is kind of its curse. You make it but... to make it.... you had to forgo\forget\undo\grow-out the magic. Maybe that's the path to confidence?

At the start of this project I knew who was getting involved in a very vague sense (apart from LB and DS) and the early releases were rough as f*^$. Of course they were! I was dubious and worried at various stages, mostly around presentation and single-player because Ultima was like Star Wars to me but the thing I knew without any shadow of a doubt... is that it takes 4-5 years to get a decent game out, that's why I kept my mouth shut till they said 'last 20%'. And the product will look as good as your budget usually. But it's been getting better and better and better. Mechanically, performance-wise and visually! Like. They. Said.

I've literally never played SotA as much as I do now (massive caveat being the SP experience which is my primary thing, I have not started because I want it to be polished AF). Every release I play it feels closer and closer to that Ultima feel though. And they promised this. And I think they'll deliver. They said they would deliver. Even with the barrage of s^*#e they've copped along the way.

I, for one, applaud their tenacity.

It's so popular to s&|t on everything these days. "Ooh, I'm not going to see Solo because screw The Last Jedi!". /golfclap

I am scared to produce things now, because unlike the world I grew up in where cool stuff was happening all the time, now I'm scared I'll be eviscerated by the entitled. And in this kind of world, people who endure, like Port have (@DarkStarr ), deserve every ounce of respect.

Don't worry about the dark triad. Listen to this instead.

Im playing Bards Tale 4 right now, if you want a true spiritual successor to 80's and 90's games, you should pick it up (probably 40 hours of play). Its GREAT!
