Very cool. Awesome new crafting details. I like what I'm hearing very much.

A few interesting quotes from the article: (my highlighting)

In the earlier versions of the crafting system, there was no visual indication that you had met the requirements for making anything, even after dragging ingredients into the crafting area. Starr Long tells me the team talked about it quite a bit and in the end decided that was a little too time-consuming and for no good in-game lore, immersion, or other reason to keep it that hard. With the new system, when you have the correct items in the crafting area to make something on the combine, the craft button on the bottom of the GUI will light up and become clickable to let you know.

When the game is eventually released, one of the aspects of crafting will be that players never experience a total failure. When you combine the ingredients, there are percentage chances of success and failure, as well as critical success and failure. As you might expect, a success means you make what you planned to, and critical success means you make it better in some fashion.

Another point that both Richard and Starr reiterated during this last visit was their commitment to making player-crafted items the best in the game. Other developers have paid lip-service to the same ideal, but there’s no doubting the sincerity in these guys when they talk about it.

I do like the idea of the game vendors spreading player-made goods around the world. Definitely the type of immersion I'm looking for when crafting.

Let's hope such ideals make it into production. :)

TTH is great at engaging writing, but he really needs an editor XD

DarkStarr sure looks like a simple anchor in that pic... *cough*

While I would applaud the lack of a total critical failure.. would not constantly being able to try to improve an item eventually negate the risk of failure? So what if you might make it worse.. if you do just keep trying until it's improved. Eventually you'll end up with max quality right?

Unless they plan to make crafting cost coin for the crafter with the even increasing repair costs.. which I absolutely hate the idea of. Will craft failure ultimately have a point no return? Otherwise the risk of failure becomes meaningless through sheer stubbornness does it not?

Right Bowen, I think it would cause durability loss on failure or something along those lines, so repairs cost more, and possibly upon failure you have to repair it just to get it ready to enhance again. Then your alchemist needs to get a hold of it and enchant it up, then you need to use it for awhile so your affinity goes up.

I dunno. I'm skeptical of the system but I hope it works out well.

Reading this makes me even more excited about the crafting system. I love the sounds of the depth they have put into this. I was quite worried from the 6 month video about crafting just being simple click done crafting which I hate. It's sounding better and better.

    I'm super hyped now!

    I think it's pretty fab.

A flood of newcomers from the modern world, showing up with their modern thoughts and concepts, and finding they can't implement most of them due to lack of modern industry.

I'm waiting for a Babbage mechanical computing machine to pop up somewhere, maybe in the back of a bank or something. That would be a hoot. :)

The editor before that committed sepuku, so I guess it's a step up at least.
