I was taken to Highvale outside the gate when I finished Anais tutorial. The bard could be heard from where I was standing telling me to open the gate and pass through. I did and found myself inside the Battle of Highvale. When I turned around I could not get back out because I didnt have the key yet. Maybe I am back on the right track now.

Agreed. In 767 my new avatar went into the Battle of Highvale appearing at the location of the non-operational lunar rift. (After finishing the Anais tutorial section.)
Not sure why the first try brought me outside the gate.
