I guess, though it would be a little inconvenient, wouldn't bother me too much to have to walk a short distance to pick my horse up.

But what about once it was in the game world. Would we have to dismount our horse in the field, and have it park itself where we left it, then have to keep running back to it to move it closer to were we had moved on the map? Would be a bit annoying to have to constantly chase it around the map and remember where we parked it last.

I really prefer the summons approach.

In my dream world, I would just have it inherent combat pet abilities, where it defaults to following the player in a defensive state. If the mount is lost or killed you no longer have a mount, until you get a new one :) Would love to see animal taming incorporated in this process, both as a skill and as a player driven purchasable commodity.

I hear you that you'd rather have a summoned mount; I think you're with the majority on this one.

Nooo - do not want my cute little horsey to be killed. Let this not be a thing :(

I'd be on board with having it follow me around and be a combat horse though. But no permadeaths for my horse.

And a taming skill would also be awesome.

I'm hoping for pets and animals that stay in the world. They have stables (which don't fit on most lots), barns (which fit on village lots), and the house rooms should be sufficient to park any excess mounts...Basements are pretty good sized too.

I like the whole interactive pet thing myself...UO mounts were great...even tho they got killed all the time, I did have tamer friends :)

Captain Jack thinks that reality in gaming is also a great thing, but you have to think to yourself, how can you get players not to be lazy?

    Option 1
    Login
    Get your horse from Stables.
    Pay stable master.
    Mount horse.
    Ride horse to destination.
Secure horse at destination with various options.
    Adventure on foot.
    Circle back to horse.
    Lead horse to water.
    Mount horse.
    Ride horse back to StablesLogout

    Option 2
    Login
    Fast call horse from magic.
Ride to destination and stable horse in magic.
    Adventure on foot.
    Fast call horse from magic.
    Ride horse to town.
    Stable horse in magic.
    Logout

    Option 3
    Login
    Fast travel to destination.
    Adventure on foot.
    Fast travel to town.
    Logoff

Devs have selected Option 3. If horses are in game, then it will move to option 2. Option 2 can be made interesting or funny to the majority of gamers:

Option 1 however great for Captain Jack, is never going to be an option for the majority of gamers. So eventually after someone captures a Spanish gold fleet we'll have horses and magic to get them to us.

    Option 4
    Login
Captain Jack stumbles from bed, looks out over bow of ship.
    Adventures to galley on foot.
    Eats horse.
    Gets drunk.
    Logoff

I suppose if we can resurrect in ghost form, so should our horses :)

Well we did voice our opinions about horses not being summoned but physcial in the world. The development team even created a barn and stable for them, well perhaps for them. ;) Part of the nostalgia from Ultima Online for me was wandering the hills for a new horse because my poor horsey had died. One of my friends was an awesome tamer and when poor majoria would say "oh my poor horse has just died" and *cries*, well off we would go to pick out another horse to tame. I loved those times.:)

The realism is a bit fudged in Skyrim, because if you fast travel to a town, you find your horse automatically at the stables. They had to do this, I'm guessing, because people would otherwise lose their horses too easily as the horse will run away during a battle. I remember every time I was playing, and a dragon showed up, I was worried about my horse running away.

Whatever they do, I don't think they should ever require you to log out at a stables, since not everybody has control on how they log out. Someone might be disconnected from the network and that would mean they lose their horse. I really don't think UO handled this right. Besides, its not going to work if your mount is basically a purchased add-on item. If you purchased it with cash, people expect to never lose it.

Requiring players to look for a horse they lost is would also be a problem, like it was in Skyrim.

So there are some things they can do to make it feel more realistic, but they're going to have fudge it a bit in any case IMO.

My horse can't die - I paid actual money for my horse through the Stretch Goal.

I'm not expecting pets purchased in the add-on store to die :>

They could always make it so pledge horses never die, but the horses purchased with in-game gold can die, though.... as an incentive...

yes I hear you redfish. I guess I was thinking about the feature for horses is what is being purchased not the actual horse and the fact that it could be a fun thing for tamers to have the horses running around and tameable.
I don't care exactly which way it goes, but just an idea from the past.:)

Well the ones you buy with real money shouldn't be able to die, but they should be able to get killed and then be returned to some place where you'd have to go retrieve them...

But basically if they make pledge horses different than other horses, it'll just follow the pattern they're doing with everything else... prosperity items, tax-free lots, etc..

Nah, summons skill is a better approach to this kind of function (horse mount).

Horses should always be retrievable in any case, as long as they don't die. At the stables, if you can't call them with a whistle.

Less nuts than chasing your horse all over the map would drive you (and don't forget drunken parking),
