Totally agree, the issues seemed minor compared to the issues of immersion/graphical style of the new map.

I believe the current map used in R4 was just a placeholder... curious to how it will look in R5...

While the current map is not even close to finished, it is (or was as of R4) NOT a placeholder, but the earliest version of the new art direction. The shield icon was conscious choice and the paper look was a conscious choice to change the direction of the overworld map. Darkstarr said as much in the Overland Map Poll thread.

That being said, with all the stink that has been made about it, who knows what we'll get in the future?

I'm hoping for a completely different overhead map/view than the paper version. I just don't see how they can make it immersive or consistent..no matter how much polish is applied. I'd like for the backers to at least be able to test drive the 3d overhead map they had been working on in a future release. Maybe we will all see the light and agree that paper beats 3D rock.

I apologize if some of my negativity was in any way trollish. The map is a very important part of the game and not "just a means of travel".. and like so many others, I'm very passionate about it. The overhead view may not necessarily be a game breaker or game maker..but it can have a serious impact on the overall experience.

    is everything.
Why were the comments section on the article closed? Seems the Ultima Codex is censoring it's community.

By the way: Thank you for that wonderful article, Golem Dragon. Every time this subject comes up I get swept up in emotion. I enjoyed your thoughtful approach to the map.

Or they don't like what's being said, once it's closed it soon drops out of sight.
I have had a few closed usually after a few diehard fans start complaining that it's negative or trolling.

well seeing how I have interacted with the owner of Ultima Codex for years and trust the guy and like how he does things, I believe it is just time related... in looking back at posts I have done done for him on his site, they are all closed except for my most recent ones.... even those where nobody ever posted any comments... it is definitely time related and not censorship...

    Difference being:
Ni no Kuni is a quasi-revival of the JRPG of old, inspired by (you guessed it) the Ultima series.
Fire Emblem has had the same paper overworld map since its inception 25 years ago.

Fire Emblem, at least, knows its origins. This SotA map is too much.
