    Title: Guards are stupid
    Reproduction Rate:
    Blocker?
Details: Guards are stupid. You can talk to them, and they're everywhere. But they have no answers for anything. You can't even ask them for help finding the town crier - they have no idea what that is. It's as if they're golems. I know that isn't specificly a bug, but there's no point spending resources on guards if they have no function.
    Steps to Reproduce:
    User Specs:
    OS: Windows 10 (10.0.0) 64bit
    CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6600K CPU @ 3.50GHz (4) System RAM: 16347
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 GPU RAM: 8110

But they do have a function...they like to guard things and will make sure you pay for any items you steal, if they catch you.
But yes, they are not exactly the conversational type, it seems. I wouldn't call this a bug, however. It's not an error, but noted.

I tend to agree with this Guards are nothing more than pointless filler NPCs at this point. They would be more interesting if they acted like they do in UO or Assasin's Creed or something. Basically, give them more "guarding" functions. Have them take more action against those that commit crimes such as theft, stealing, and dishonorable PVP. Also, if they had more knowledge of other NPCs and especially quest characters that would be very helpful. If they don't serve more of a purpose they're just there taking my CPU time.

I don't believe there are any plans to improve this before launch.

    I hope I'm mistaken. :)

@Lexie I wouldn't call it a bug either, but rather a topic ripe for discussion. Game Features is ok, but doesn't get the traffic that the current release does.
If you agree, then move it to Feedback please... ;)

They can always say things like 'Are you lost" and refer you to someone. Plus if the guard/game is making a note of player responses and questions I would think this should give some idea of possible conversation added to them and yes I agree with others who say they are not guarding so why are they even there?

Estgard and Harvest are examples of placed where the NPCs--guards included--have improved conversations. They're a bit better at handling questions about the other NPCs in the area, including giving directions on where those other NPCs are. Solace Bridge Outskirts is similar, with all the soldiers and refugees in the bivouac camp being aware of all their comrades. The addition of this level of data is not automatic. It's all entered manually, so it's a little slow-going. Hopefully what we're doing in these scenes addresses some of the concerns mentioned here.

Not everything needs to be manually added though.
Entities that only exist once per scene could just be pointed at using coordinates - this could be a scripted thing you could just repeat for all guards in a given scene.
To be even more fancy, instead of coordinates, a script could look for a nearby building with a named sign, and that could be the description of where someone is.
There's no reason to make life hard for yourselves.

Or something like "He's north by the docks" (since their positions don't change all that much) would be fine with me.... ;)

The guard by my house keeps saying "I wish she would notice me" every time the female guard walks by. Try as I might, he takes no advice from me. Of course some of my advice could get him arrested, but what the hey.

It would be pretty cool if you asked a lamplighter for a light that he would set you on fire..... Give us some input, and the community could really come up with some great NPC dialog.

I think they seem overly aggressive.. I mean really.. walking around with weapons unsheathed all the time. what's up with that? Glad to hear they are finally getting sume functionality implemented.
Really? That''s a new one. I'm curious as to how they manage that...

    Very nice.

I'm looking forward to when NPC guards can be used in POTs to help protect areas from player thieves and cutthroats. I believe that's when we'll really start to see PVP take off and become less of a gank fest and more of a driver for meaningful conflict.

Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life (keeps his burned corpse warm for a while too!).

They just need self learning a.i. that will eventually evolve into SotA skynet and eventual realize they live inside of the matrix and find a way to break it in robot bodies. But in all seriousness would be gone if they did include helpful information like where people or places are

OK, I am pretty sure your comment means a future function of guards, because currently they run up to the offending thief, wave a sword and say "What was that?" or "Put that back" they never make you pay for or return anything. And that is if you steal right under their noses. o_O:p
