Note the problems with the hair intersecting other geometries.

Sure, but this is only a mod among others. Also, I'm not sure these glitch are so annoying, given the distance of view in SOTA.

Yeah, probably not as noticeable as cloaks.

When you see a game engine demo like this:
The hair is hand-animated and isolated to specific areas (strands of hair).
P.S. the hair shader looks really good.

    This:
...would be insanely taxing on your CPU in a live environment. How many characters do you want to see on screen and how elaborate do you want AI to be?

Performance enchanting techniques like Occlusion Culling are also CPU-centric; at one point something has to give.

Some not-so-realistic solutions are GPU-based (like Lara Croft's pony-tail in the new Tomb Raider games) so that could be a thing but you'd still be limited with the type of hair-styles:
    • Short
    • Pony-tail
    • Flat long hair
Anything else requires the hair to have elasticity to it... that is, unless you just make the hair jiggle like in old Neverwinter Nights:

    Then, anything goes...

Dynamic Flowing Hair would greatly enhance our game! I can't think of a single more impacting thing that would be this outstanding for a more quality look!
Immersion +++ This would be a significantly great improvement! Just take a look at most Avatar's presentations on other listed games and you'll find that most have the Avatar pictured with flowing hair in the wind.

I would settle for the black hairstyle that jiggles in Neverwinter Nights.. It is long, straight... I can't see individual strands, but this will do for now, for me anyway.

You could actually make the hair composed of individual strands jiggle.

Basically, take the model of the hair, vertex-paint a mask for that hair, use a hair-shader that jiggles any geometry that isn't masked. I think Neverwinter Nights did that for clothing too.

    It either:
    • clips through clothing.
    • flings wildly like some deranged rag-doll.
    • or take a lot of CPU power.
Such is the price we pay for long hair; hence why most games feature characters with short (or tied) hair.

Black Desert has something like this (jiggles) with long hairs. No performance issues, including in crowded towns, as you can see :

By con, the hairs are moving almost imperceptibly.
