I skilled up at 50% and now I have 12.5% to gain bonus material when refining.
I did hundreds of craft attempts but I never got any kind of bonus return..

Someone can tell me how that works ?

    Thanks!

The refining sub skills only apply to a small number of basic crafting combines. So for example, you can get bonus timber but you can't get bonus wood pulp.

It is only really worth the exp if you refine much silver and gold, otherwise my opinion is do not bother

Hooo got an extra Silver ingot !
This is what I thought but I don't got the chance to see it until now.

The % of chance to get extra mats is definitively wrong.. its more like 1.25% than 12.5%

    Thanks guys

It seems to pan out in regards to ratios if you do larger batches. I can do batches of 10 and see maybe 1 in 3 batches.

With blacksmithing t2 ores; the gain seems to generally fall about a half percent below the average cited for the skill level.

I don't know if the % chance is correct or not, but I know the skill works.

When I do runs of ingots with like 500 gold ore, I end up with more than 125 ingots every time (what the basic recipe should equate to). I don't want to state exact numbers or even an average because honestly I didn't keep track... but I do recall getting many extra ingots as I was doing batches of 38 at a time and usually see at least 1 or 2 freebies in each batch.

Currently running 1022 gold ore; at 90-98 level efficiency. (some gold coins came in....) This works out to 18.5-19.7% ratio for crafting.

    1022/4 = 255.5 = 256 ingots.

I made an extra 47 ingots above the 256.

This works out to 18.3% and has been rather consistent over the last 3 weeks for batches above 500.

Yea, I just did a small test with what I had leftover in my crafting box:

My "Efficient Refine Materials - Smelting" is locked at 90 skill = +18.5% Chance (per tooltip)

Made 9 Copper Ingots (with metal scraps) = Yielded me 10 Gold Ingots [1 Extra Ingot]
Made 2 Iron Ingots (with metal scraps) = Yielded me 2 Iron Ingots [No extras]
Made 12 Gold Ingots = Yielded me 14 Gold Ingots [2 Extra ingots]

So, for a total of 23 ingot attempts, I got 3 extra ingots. With an 18.5% chance, I should have gotten 4.255 extra. Of course, this was a very small sample size and 3 instead of 4 is still pretty close to what it should be.

I find that whatever amount of freebies I get from smelting is well worth the crafting xp put into this skill. Especially when it comes to free gold/silver ingots, and even more when it comes to bronze/constantan/meteoric/white iron ingots.

What is a bit of a downer for me is developing an excellent efficiency bonus (say 17-20%) is really quite a bit less because of the obligatory 5% fail rate on anything even if you are crafting at level 100+.

I would like to see crafting specialization tackle that. I know 5% fail isn't a huge number, but at the same time, super master crafters doing the most routine thing (eg. smelting iron ingots) still lose 5% of their batch so their efficiency bonus is really 17-20% minus 5%. :/

The only thing lost on a failure is the fuel for whatever refining process you are doing (coal, salt, creosote, etc). The raw material remains for you to attempt to process again, and so still have a 17-20% chance to gain an extra item out of the deal.

Oh, wow, I guess I never diligently watched the ore number to realize that. Thanks for the correction.

My only "issue" with this is the cost of secondary materials now to craft. As we 'gain' 18.5% more ingots; the t2 crafting ratios are further off then they were; making a shortage.
