I think a Stroh Violin fits the setting best.

How about a tiny violin - I could see that being quite useful ;)

If they want to keep it a little Medievalish (who knows at this point) they can make it a fiddle rather than a violin.

A lot of other instruments I'd like to see, like a pipe type instrument.

    Dragonbone Instruments

Just a concept I posted in the wishlist forum that involved a violin. Inspired more by the potential sound of using a dragons vocal plates to simulate the difference between a Violin and Electric Violin in-game.

It is already not only Medievalish. There are steam punk elements and Tesla Coils. The Stroh Violin is part of both eras.

Sorry for my crypticness btw ..;)

My point is that "Medievalish" is something different than Medieval. Most fantasy RPGs do not try to exactly replicate the historicity of the Medieval era, they all have what you'd call pre-Medieval and post-Medieval elements; despite that, they still try to capture the feeling of the Medieval era in certain senses. Rapiers, which are common in "Medieval" RPGs, have nothing to do with the real Medieval era. Ultima was never any different. It had a lot of what would be considered anachronistic elements, but for the most part captured the feel of being in a Medieval land.

The same way, "clockpunk" has been used as a word to describe technological contraptions in a Medieval/Renaissance settings, since mechanical clocks were being created then and there were all sorts of automata, but the difference between clockpunk and steampunk is kind of subjective. You know steam technology existed in the Medieval era? The aelipile (Hero's engine), for instance. You could theoretically build up a form of Medieval "steampunk." Still, "clockpunk" has been used as a description to give things Medieval feel and flavor.

So the choice between a violin and fiddle would just be another kind of these things. I imagine that whatever musical instrument it is, it could be turned into a bard artifact. Which would be better for a bard, a violin artifact, or a fiddle artifact?

Its subjective and up to the devs. Arguably, violins are less anachronistic than rapiers -- which I think should be in the game -- because you find them in the 1500s and and thus not really a problem ;) But, in any case, I still think it would be appropriate to keep some Medieval flavor even with anachronisms. So, this was just an option I was bringing up in case the devs decided to go that way ...

We also need a string bass instrument and a tambourine, The drums we have in game right now are way to loud and over take a song when playing in a group.
