    Hi All!

I want to create SotA blog on Russian MMO portal, but its editor tells me, that he is not sure that SotA is MMO!!!
    It's shocking.
But I really cannot find a decisive decription either on Wikipedia or Kickstarter or even on the official SotA site!!!
    Even here

or players who play in the default open multiplayer, Shroud of the Avatar will feel very much like a traditional MMO.

very much like is not the same as is a
    isn't it?
    :(

    Lord British, help me!
Give me some links to pages, where SotA is described as MMORPG!

    Thank you!

It's not a typical MMORPG, it is a selective multiplayer online RPG.
This means the game is as much a single player rpg as it is an MMORPG. But this also means that it is not like every other MMORPG out there.

What is there that doesn't let to call it MMO?

    Guys, it's critical :)
The game is unknown in "Russian Web" so i want to make it a bit more known.
I though that MMO-site is useful to promote the game among hardcore MMORPG players...

Shroud is Single Player, Selective Multiplayer and 'Open Multiplayer'.

It is up to the player to decide how they wish to play, but for all intent and purposes 'Open Multiplayer' will feel pretty much like a traditional MMO and for that reason I would class the game as an MMO...... in fact you only have to look at the E3 awards where Shroud is labelled as 'Best Indie MMO'. http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm/feature/8607/page/2

You can play the game in single player mode without ever meeting other players, you can even play offline.
Also there is a friends only mode, in which you only see friends from your friendslist and no strangers in the game.

Even if you play in online mode there is a player limit set to the scenes which is 64 players max if I recall correctly - although this will most likely change to higher numbers and is also dependant on the size of the scene.

This is very true and I think a lot of this is balanced between intent and performance. Far too MMOs actually allow too many players into the same scene that causes massive performance issues.

So we it is not a Massive MO?
    And it never will be?
    Is it true?

    OMG...

At the moment there are caps on the number of players in each scene....This could be 64 although I do recall it was increased. Once the cap has been reached a new 'instance' of the scene is created for additional players albeit the world is exactly the same and any action that a player does in one instance (eg place a house) will appear in the other instance.

Personally its probably a better system as players will ultimately get better performance and a more enjoyable experience. Of course the caps can always be altered as well, I would expect it to increase at launch due to better optimisation and polish.

    Right.
Guys. Don't make it more complicated as it is.
YES it is an MMO. Yeah there are ways to play alone or as closed group and thats all cool and froody.
But SotA is designed as MMO.
So for all that counts for your portal administrator it is of course an mmo.

Look at it any way you want to. If more than a hundred thousand can play at the same time. I would say it qualifies. No matter what filters you use to see people in the world. So...

    • Multiplayer Online game mode is an MMO. The world state is the same for all.
    • Friends Online game mode is an MMO with filters for who you see and interact with. The world state is the same for all.
    • Single Player Online game mode is an MMO heavily filtered for who you see and interact with. The world state is the same for all.
The above three modes can be changed as a player sees fit.
    • Single Player Offline is not an MMO at all. You have your own world state you interact with. This mode can not be changed into any other game mode.
    • In this mode a player may never bring what they have into the Online World in any way.
Therefore it is what you want it to be.

At least this is my humble understanding.

Last I heard, mmorpg.com has done article after article on SotA.
PCGamer awarded it Indie MMO of the Year.

    Is that enough?

just because they didn't have a new category for what it is.

Do all those other things count when the developers themselves tell us it is not an MMO?

Once again, I'm going to go with what Lord British says.

It has some MMO-like features, but even in its most MMO-like state, it still isn't an MMO.

People don't get that right now, but they'll figure it out eventually.

    This.
The man asked a simple question.
Stop beeing nit-picky. He asked for the sake of promoting this game for more players!
Give him the yes to move on.
