Keeping NPCs in character

There's a demon in Andoris who says (and I'm paraphrasing) "If you go past this door you'll be entering a PvP zone. That means player vs. player. That's when any player can attack any other player. So, make sure you're ready to be attacked by other players." (Or something to that effect).

I understand that players need to be warned when entering a pvp zone so it's consensual. However, isn't there a more immersive way to do it? Reading things like "players" and "pvp" in game reminds me I'm not in New Britannia and I'm just playing a mmo. That's not goood. Just changing some words would go a long way. Something like "Beware, Outlander! Traveling beyond this door lies great danger! You will no longer be under the protection of the city guard. Any other outlander will be able to attack you and face no consequences for it. Enter at your own risk, Avatar!"

I think something like that would be evident that it's a pvp zone without saying "pvp zone".

 

I am hoping they get rid of those sort of npcs before launch. They do stand out as obviously not really belonging.

 

Out of all the things that were out of character for those NPCs (there's one for every PvP zone entry), the fact that he was a curiously friendly satyr, that he was named after a Portalarium dev, and in one case surrounded by small mewling kittens did not break your immersion, but his mentioning PvP did?

Those NPCs are immersion breaking intentionally, so that you are certain to notice them and heed their warning that you are entering a PvP zone instead of being lured into one unwarily. Like the entrances they guard, they are for testing purposes only and are not intended to be part of the game's story.

What? You mean there won't be friendly, kitten-hoarding Satyrs in the game? I am disappoint.

I call upon the scribes in the community for a multi-volume fanfic about this Satyr so he becomes canon.

 

I hope I don't go down in infamy as the backer who got the friendly, kitten loving Satyrs removed from the game.

I was quite concerned when I thought I heard Mister Wiggins growl because i was petting Xena....but hey, the cats seemed in character for a dock and presumably fishing area!

 

I've gotten a bad rap here! Lol. I loved everything about those friendly, cat loving satyrs except them talking about PvP. Loved the cats just not the convo.

 

Is it safe to assume this is temporary? Would the quote PVP flag unquote make this unnecessary?

Point taken, not only did I mss that but I quoted it....doh! That being said I was hoping for a slip of insight of how the flag might really work. The speculation is so rampant .
