@Berek, Can we get an update on the status of the Unity Linux bugs?

Nope, something! Just not what you want to hear.

I asked in the chat yesterday (6/1) and was told that the work with the Unity team was specifically about scenes that were leading to crashes of the client.
No specific work was done regarding the myriad of issues in the Linux environment. I am presuming that is because the bugs are definitely with Unity and Unity is working to fix them.

Thought they mentioned something about the Linux issues in the hangout yesterday but was unable to find it on review - probably too distracted.

Want these bugs gone so I can at least test decay on my items without spinning into orbit on death, frequent crashes on scene exit, and be able to rotate my camera around my avatar.

That makes me sad. It doesn't really seem stable enough to play right now on Linux, so I haven't been. I hope it gets [fixed | better | playable] soon. :(

There are just rules you have to follow, like no swimming, no dying, coconuts only ln the world map, etc. :(

And most importantly, no matter what else you do, don't stop walking.

Especially if you see freaky Guard Halmar.

    Just. Keep. Walking.

I took this from the Steam patch notes:

"Linux: We are experiencing significant issues with the Linux version of the game due to the latest version of Unity. We are working with Unity to resolve these as quickly as we can
    • Avatars don’t idle. Stuck in walking animation.
    • Movement breaks when casting various skills while running.
    • Dying snaps avatars to incorrect position within a scene. Will eventually crash.
    • Using Coconuts in select scenes (like Aerie) will throw the avatar out of boundaries. Will eventually crash.
    • Taking screenshots crashes the client"
It seems they're working with Unity directly and so I guess we have to wait, hopefully not too long...

Yeah, that's been in the patch notes since R29.

Every time I have asked I never got an answer, even on the livestreams (not today as I was at work)...I too would like an update, but I guess its much the same if their being silent about it.

    Just asked @Chris in Discord:

    ---
[15:58] Katrina Bekers: @Atos just to put my dreams to sleep: any news of Linux fixes. I gladly accept a "no", "idk" or "go away, punk" as answer

[15:59] Atos: Katrina, we updated to the latest patch of Unity for this build as well. From talking to the Unity engineer we had on site, the Linux fixes comes in spurts because they don't integrate that groups work often
[16:00] Atos: I told him as long as they had a big spurt before July, there will be no rioting
    ---

Last patch = should be ready shortly after the time of this writing

    v426, walk-in-place still present, setting-with-autonomous-willpower still present (so I can't really play).

Didn't test orbit launch on death, and the other bugs.

So, essentially, Unity doesn't really care too much about Linux either and the bugs might be fixed by R32.

All I know is I don't care about Windows at all (I used it from 2.0-10.0 and DOS before that) and cannot wait until Unity is working with Ubuntu properly again. Unix was the beginning and it will be the end. MS was a cute blip on the radar and it's time has come. :D

I completely stopped using Windows sometime in the late 90s. Back then it was painful because there were no commercial games being produced for Linux. Fortunately, UO ran pretty good on Wine.

Aye, I was beginning to consider testing in Wine. My MSWin games from the 90's and early 2000's run so much better in WINE than they ever did in MSWin and I am elated at how little disk space my system requires to do all that it does. Yuri's Revenge FTW. Most of those games completely failed for me after moving to Win 7. Had to dual boot Win XP and that was a hit or miss on whether or not the game would work when I booted XP.

I had an idea today thanks to the other Linux thread. I ran the 32 bit version of SotA (Shroud of the Avatar.x86) in Ubuntu 16.04 x64 and low and behold the major Unity issues that just plague Linux did *NOT* occur.

Based on my thirty minutes of play the issues may really just be attributed to the 64 bit version of Unity!
Standing Idle:I stood still when not walking! I could pan my camera around Tanda and actually see the new female avatar's face. Was pretty cool.
Ghost: I died and stood there without issue. Could let go of the keys and/or mouse and wander around happily as a ghost.

I felt like I was a Windows player for a few minutes, and except for the CTD when I left East Sanctus Forest all was great!

Then I relaunched the game in 64 bit and
...was walking in place again. /sigh
...died and spun out into space.

So there you have it. 32 bit good, 64 bit bad. Launch the 32 bit version from terminal to see if you might need some additional libraries. I have most of the 32 bit libraries for other apps already so it worked perfectly for me.

What about memory leaks? Did you play for a long time?

[edit] What 32 bit libraries did you need to install?

Memory leaks still looked pretty bad - after all I CTD'd when I exited the scene I started in.

To double check on your system just run the following in the SotA directory:
    ldd Shroud\ of\ the\ Avatar.x86 | awk '{ print $3 }' | xargs dpkg -S | sort
This one-liner misses one library for me, but it's part of the libc6.i386 package anyway, so no loss.

These are the packages and libraries that the 32 bit version requires.

    libc6:i386:
    • /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6
    • /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libdl.so.2
    • /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libm.so.6
    • /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpthread.so.0
    • /lib/i386-linux-gnu/librt.so.1
    • /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (this is the lib the one-line command missed)
    libgcc1:i386:
    • /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libgcc_s.so.1
    libstdc++6:i386:
    • /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6
    • /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libX11.so.6
    • /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libXau.so.6
    • /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libxcb.so.1
    libxcursor1:i386: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libXcursor.so.1
    libxdmcp6:i386: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libXdmcp.so.6
    libxext6:i386: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libXext.so.6
    libxfixes3:i386: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libXfixes.so.3

    libxrandr2:i386:
    • /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libXrandr.so.2
    • /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libXrender.so.1

The last library is dependent on your graphics driver for OpenGL. Obviously I'm running on nvidia.
    nvidia-361: /usr/lib32/nvidia-361/libGLdispatch.so.0 /usr/lib32/nvidia-361/libGL.so.1 /usr/lib32/nvidia-361/libGLX.so.0
