I tried for an hour to get the game to a condition where the framerate is somewhat acceptable but to no result. :(

    First login:
Resolution at my default res of 1920x1117, windowed mode. Unplayable framerate.
Trying to reduce resolution finally ended up with first freeze of my pc, not sure what actually caused it.
All additional video settings disabled from here on, shadow distance to none.

    Second login:
Falling through the ground constantly. Trying to fiddle with the video settings gave me the second freeze.

    Third login:
    Falling through the ground constantly.

    Fourth login:
I assumed deleting my char and creating a new one might fix the falling issue. It did, as long as you do not relog again.
Resolution at 1680x1200, still unplayable framerate. Plus very dark scene.

I tried a couple of times more, having one more freeze, but did not manage to get it into a somewhat playable state. :( The last release I had the chance to try was R3, where the performance was already poor but playable after all.

    My specs:
    Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, 64 bit
    AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor, 3.4Ghz × 4
    ATI Radeon HD 7770
    16GB DDR3 RAM
    Samsung SSD
    Cable Internet 64/5

I'd love to see and test more of the game, but this just isn't possible at this time. :(
Any ideas on how to change that are appreciated. :)

    Best

You have a better ATI card then I did but when I was using ATI, I had problems with getting the OpenGL drivers to work.

Unfortunately I never solved the problem so cannot help you there. My solution was to buy a new computer with an nVidia card. Works fine now. ;-)

I've got the same problem with very poor performance in Linux, using NVIDIA (EVGA GeForce GTX 760 w/2GB of VRAM). I'm getting no better than 4-6 fps in SoTA, but other games run just fine - the drivers are definitely working fine.

Here's the bug report I filed over in the Performance Issues forum:
    https://www.shroudoftheavatar.com/f...r-performance-4-6-fps-with-linux-client.9858/

CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Processor
    RAM: 16GB
    Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
    Graphics Card: GeForce GTX 760
    OS Version: Linux 3.2.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.2.54-2 x86_64 GNU/Linux (Crunchbang 11 waldorf, based on Debian 7.4)
    NVIDIA driver version: 304.88

    Hi,

I had a freeze with fgl earlier today, after upgrading to latest. Might be driver-related as it froze the entire machine. I found some logging output in /var/log/syslog (on Ubuntu), so would you mind to check this (or /var/log/messages for most others) if there's some info about the gfx driver crashing or spitting out a stream of problems?

    Thank you

I would but can't for two reasons.
1- My system has been running fine in fantastic mode everywhere except maybe in owls head where I lagged a bit every 5 steps.

2- I don't know how to check this.

Sorry. Would love to help otherwise.

Hope this helps and thank you for looking into it. :)

    Edit:
Meanwhile I managed to play a bit with reducing my desktop resolution to 1280x800 - anything below would make my eyes bleed - and run the game in windowed mode, maximized. Do not run it unmaximized, at least with Ubtuntu there is something very wrong with how the desktop rendering gets done and it slows down the game even more.
I needed to reduce my desktop resolution as when maximizing, the game would switch to my desktop resolution, which is 1920x1200... I thought it would upscale, but it does not.
This gives me 6-18fps, depending on where I am. 6 in the town, 18 in villages.

Pretty weird... especially the following line is a bit scary:
    BUG: soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 22s! [Launcher.x86_64:3069]

So far, don't know, scratching my head about this...

For me R4 was marginally playable, but R5 was not when I first tried it. My system specs are "lower" than either of the above :

    CPU - Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz
    RAM - 8 Gig
Graphics Card Vendor - NVIDIA Corporation
    Graphics Card - GeForce 9800 GT (1023MB)
    OS - Ubuntu 13.10 x86_64
    NVIDIA driver version: 304.88

What got it working for me, playability-wise, was going into the games's video config setting and switching the Quality setting from 'Custom' to 'Fast'. YMMV.

    Salut,

I've been using ATI cards for the last 5 years and the only thing I can tell about it is... CRAP! There are always some troubles with these cards and/or drivers in a way or in another. Tearing, lags, poor fps, unstability and very very very long time before supporting their new cards in their propriatary driver...

So 2 month ago, I decided to buy a NVidia to see if what has been said by many about the gaming experience was true. And...

    1- I bought it
    2- I pluged it
3- I installed the nvidia blob drivers
4- And, I've finaly been able to play, to watch my video and so on... properly!

"Plug and Play"... U Remember that?

Yeah! Now, I can play with most (if not all) of the graphics options "on" or at "max" in a lot of games. And Fu@#|ing yeah, the experience is awesome!

Here is a sample of the games I play on Linux:

    With Steam on Linux:
DOTA2, Metro: Last light, Serious Sam 3, Amnesia: The dark decent, Killing Floor, Trine 2, Half Life (the all serie), Portal, Left4Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Natural Selection 2...

    Via PlayOnLinux (Wine emulator):
    Command&Conquer 3 (the all serie)
    Never Winter Nights 2

and via steam for win on PlayOnLinux:
Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition
    The Witcher: enhanced Edition
    Torch Light II

So, yes playing on Linux is now possible but not with ATI graphics... They suck!

    Now, about R5:

The game was running "well" (in general & considering it's an Alpha) even @1920x1200 full options activated.
BUT, I wasn't able to craft, no questing and the worst is that the "Falling throug the ground bug" hasn't been adressed yet! Wich means, loosing everything I did/get each time I logged off... Sadly, I can't say that I enjoyed this release.

    Finaly, here is my rig:

CPU: Intel i3770 (4460 MHz Turbo mode included)
    Memory: 16 GB DDR3 1866 MHz
Graphics Card: MSI GTX760 Gaming Mini 2Go
    ---------------------------------------------------------
OS Version: Debian GNU/Linux Jessie 64 bit (8.0 testing + multiarch i386) with Linux Kernel 3.13.10-1
    xserver-xorg-core: 1.15.1-1
Nvidia binary blob driver 331.67-1 (sid) 1920x1200 60Hz
    GnomeShell 3.8.4-8

    A+

ATI Hasn't been a brand for nearly 4 years :D AMD has made vast improvements on their windows drivers. I have both NVidia and AMD systems I can say that on windows they have just as many issues no matter which way you go -Neither are flawless. I don't know about their linux drivers though.

AMD did come out with a new linux driver on Thursday

I've had great success with nVidia and Linux too. There were a few times where I've had to muck X.org and display modes to get things going properly but that was years ago.

I've always preferred nVidia since my Diamond Viper 550.
