Making of the Daemon...

    What color will the demon's eyes be? Yellow, like in the drawings? Red? Will they change with the elemental magic he's attuned to?

    Now that we have our rigged Demon we get to do the fun stuff, animation! Usually, I like to start off with two of the most basic animation assets which are Idle and Walk Cycle. This way we can start to shape his posture and formulate his personality. This character is a hulking beast and a chaotic boss. My goal is to show some asymmetry and spontaneity in his movements to help reflect his chaotic nature but also maintaining a slightly regal and purposeful attitude in his posture.

    Here are a couple of clips of first passes on Idle and Walk Cycle animations:



    And of course, it doesn't hurt to nod back to the past when possible...

    I love the design of the demon from an art perspective.

    I am curious that the word hell was removed from a previous update because New Britannia has no concept of hell. There is no accepted after life. There is no religion. So the term demon seems out of place for this setting.

    Why not go with Balrog, Fiend, Defiler, Slayer, Devourer, Scourge or even at least Daemon?

    Just because there isn't a "concept" of it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. As we've already established (lore wise) the word might be pulled by the outsiders that are encountering the beast and calling it what we would assume it is (whether right or wrong). Short of coming up with a whole new language, call an egg and egg, a duck a duck and a demon a demon. There isn't a specific reason to rename it just for the sake of renaming it to fit some random convention. Yes I could eat a zjrolzepug's fresh nnomgue folded around a nice slice of camembert, but that doesn't really convey anything more than a duck egg omelette would.

    Having said that, I'd love to see some more unusual creatures that we don't have context for (like the plants in the shardfalls) and name those something unique with nothing to associate it with.

    So much symmetry and no sign of chaos *sigh* at least a third eye or so. Chaos is not evil and doesn't need a really great designed demon fresh from hell.

    When creating a separate fantasy world, effort should be made to keep that world consistent.

    Hey all,
    Some quick answers:
    1 . Names aren't really my thing, I just make the things.... so not sure if I can help there... but I will pass it along.
    2 . Chaos is coming in the sculpt. In most things we make we start with symmetry. Asymmetry, though not the definition of chaos either, comes after the forms are defined believe it or not. While I won't be able to do completely lopsided asymmetry, like one short arm and one gigantic arm, he will have some asymmetry. The real asymmetry will come from his attacks and fighting style and personality, a very random thing as you will see. You are correct in stating Chaos is not "Evil" but he is a Chaos "Monster", the monster part makes him the evil. One more thought on the subject of looking "evil", maybe he thinks smooth skinned humans look evil. Like to me Odo's (DS9) shape shifting race looks pretty evil and they are almost featureless. :)

    3 . The tail is a limitation of tech, animation time and other things being focused on (wings, combat...) but not falling on deaf ears. :)

    Thanks for all the thoughts and feedback. They're always welcome, and we will do our best to answer them as time permits. Now back to getting the cloth ready for the dyeing coming!
