I'd love to see some of the 3d models you guys have created as 3d printable models!

Looks like Sketchfab would make this easy, since they can output models as STL files, which Shapeways can then print using any of their output substances. I've painted many a figure, so getting a chance to have a set of SotA figurines would be excellent!

So, what's the chance we could see a Shapeways store for Shroud of the Avatar figurines?

    YES

Though, as I've pointed out elsewhere, they are most likely not printable straight out of the game without a lot of fixing. And the detail will likely be lower. For example, the spiral pattern on that staff is probably a texture/bump map applied to a straight untextured pole, which means you wouldn't get the spiral pattern in the print.

That said, I'd still love to be able to do it.

I'd also like to see in-game Tabletop versions of these models at some point!

I know Rild has entertained this idea.
It might be after launch before he could give it attention. I have hopes of making a real desktop moondial.

You know how badly I want this to happen Sir Frank!!!! :D

I texted with @rild about it a few months ago, maybe we should revisit with him...? :)

(Of course, if they were to create the printable files from the higher poly sculpts rather than the in-game versions, much of that detail would be there.)

Bummer, no moondial model in Sketchfab. I'd consider building a printable one from scratch, if the reference was there. I'd probably get in trouble for it, though.

Also, looking at it, since many of the elements float, I'd have to do a different design anyway.

Sooooo.... Let's say I wanted to take a crack at a working moondial. Where would I find the actual astronomy/astrology info to figure out how to build the gearing?

Yeah, I've found his threads. But designing something like this is going to be quite a project; I was hoping something official existed so I don't put a ton of time into it only to find it's incorrect.

    Perhaps.
I don't have the kind of relationship with Portalarium that one would need for them to turn over an asset.
We could probably reach an agreement, but it would put me in competition with Rild, and I'm not willing to do that.
Assuming we got a model, we'd have to pay an artist a couple hundred dollars to make it print-ready.
Then, we'd have to pay to have the thing printed, which might be $100 for a 6" model.
So, we'd have one desktop statue for $300.
If we made two, they'd be $200 each, $400 total.
If we made 20, they'd be $110 each, $2200 total.

It would be very risky to try to stock this kind of item, and expensive for print-on-demand.

Andplusalso, @Scottie told me there was a craftable version without floaty bits, so there's potentially one that could be made as it exists in-game.
Making one that is geared properly to actually work would be quite an accomplishment, and I would probably buy one.

I will check out the craftable one. I was looking at the ornate version in the add-on store. I assumed the non-craftable one had floaty bits as well. I've got a printer, so it'd just cost me resin to print it.

Either way, I'ma go out on a limb and say selling them would land me in some pretty hot water. It'd be a cool one-off fan project, though. Maybe Portalrium would be okay with making the files available for free, but likely not. (And I wouldn't blame them. You can't enforce IP stuff if you make bits of your IP free.)

Of course not, I totally understand and wouldn't obviously want that either. I also just texted him and told him to join the convo for his input! :p

Speaking hypothetically here, if @rild got the "sign off" from Port and assuming we got a model like you outlined. Do you know any artists who could make it print ready? If so, I would be more than happy to help pay for its creation.

Also, given the higher cost of such an item it would make sense to take advanced orders, but I definitely think we could easily get 20 people to buy in.

Awesome! Rild texted me back and said he will check in here when he gets home tonight. Let's see what he has to say, but I'm getting pretty excited here Sir Frank! :D

I actually know very little of such things in real life but.. I would start by doing image searches on orrery designs on either google or bing if you want to design something that'd actually function.

Oh, I wouldn't need help with the mechanism; just with how the actual astronomy in SotA works.
