I think it would be really cool to have a skill tree dedicated to mounted combat. That way, our horses and certain tamed pets can contribute more in in combat in some way.

Because who wouldn't want to be a part of something like this:

Now of course, there would be some new items, like cavalry bows, heavy lances, heavy and light barding as well as some balance like adding a huge vulnerability to Polearms and maybe fire damage while mounted. Plus you would have your mount to think about.

I've also come up with a concept of how the tree could work:

The first skill players would unlock would be this:

Stirrups: Reduces the chance of being thrown off your mount by ( x ).

Then it would branch into 3 subtrees each one focusing on a particular style of combat: Melee, Ranged, Magic.

    Melee

    Heavy Barding Training:
Increases your mount's hitpoints by ( x ) while being ridden. Reduces the movement penalty for heavy barding equipment by ( x ).

Cavalier: Reduces incoming damage your mount takes by ( x )%.

Cavalry Charge: Charge forward at your target with your mount, dealing increased damage by ( x )% with a chance of dazing large enemies and knocking down smaller ones. This skill has a flat 30 second CD. Additionally, depending on what melee weapon you are using may have additional effects:

Polearms: Increased damage on impact by a further ( x )% damage on impact.
    Bludgeon: Reduces enemy resistance by ( x ) for ( x ) seconds. Increased daze/stun duration.
    Bladed: Bleeds the enemy for ( x ) damage for ( x ) seconds, reduces movement speed by ( x )% for ( x ) seconds.

The Mounted Combat Specialization increases the damage and effects of this skill by a small amount if you are nearby mounted party members.

    Ranged:

Mounted Archery: Reduces the accuracy penalty for shooting while mounted.

Skirmisher: Increases your mount's movement speed by ( x ) while not wearing heavy barding. Increased by a further ( x ) if no armor is equipped.

Mounted Barrage: Your mount charges to an area you set with its movement speed increased by ( x ), all while you unleash a torrent of fire down upon your target. This skill has a flat 30 second CD. The Mounted Combat Specialization gives your mount a chance to keep its movement speed buff for ( x ) seconds after they reach the target area.

    Magic:

Mounted Mage: Reduces the casting time penalty for being mounted by ( x ).

Strategist: Increases magic damage done by ( x ) while immobile and haven't taken any damage for ( x ) seconds.

    Mage Knight:
Increases resistance and magic resistance by ( x ) for ( x ) seconds. Increases FP regeneration by ( x ) for ( x ) seconds. Reduces movement speed of mount by ( x )% for ( x ) seconds. Reduces Damage Avoidance by ( x ) for ( x ) seconds. Mounted Combat Specialization adds a small bonus to interupting tolerance while this skill is active.

    What do you guys think?

I think that you're a bit premature, but that's just IMO

Perhaps, but it would still be nice.

Id be cautious - mounts were a huge downside in UO, and drastically changed the culture of the game for the worse, most especially for pvp.

That's why the possibility should be at least brought up, so they have longer to talk about how to properly balance it.
