Now gems do not have negatives to the opposing schools of magic like they used to. As well, if you put the gem in a weapon, and then enchant the weapon, you get a chance of getting a choice of 2 abilities the gem brings. Here is a list of the abilities.

    Air - Citrine
10% chance on hit to cast gust
10% chance on hit to cast lightning

    Death - Onyx
10% chance on hit to cast drain life
    15% death ray strength damage

    Earth - Emerald
10% chance on hit to cast earthquake
    15% obsidian arrow strength damage

    Fire - Ruby
10% chance on hit to cast ignite
    2.5% fire effectiveness

    Life - Diamond
100% chance on hit to cast banish undead. I dont know if this is a typo or not. I will get a tester later for me.
    2.5% life effectiveness

    Sun - Garnet
10% chance on hit to cast searing ray
10% chance on hit to cast blind

    Water - Sapphire
    10% ice arrow damage
    10% soothing rain healing

    Moon - Lunaism
    15% shadow form length
    7.5% night step range

I think attunment effects the proc as well, so if you have high death attunment, it will do better drain life procs.

    It does.

+10 attuenment for one handed weapons
    +20 for two handed.

Thanks for all the infos here and on other crafting threads, really helpful to those that let's say are farrrrrr from testing such things but curious about getting there in due time. Very helpful towards estimating whether the effort will be worth it prior to bending one's in-game efforts far in that direction. Soooo thanks, much appreciated :)

I think he was asking if the proc rate (10%) actually increases with attunement though; such that say with 0% attunement you get that 10% proc rate, but at 90% attunement you get a significantly higher proc rate (say 50% - just throwing a number out there mind you!).

I'd assume the power of the spell proc'ing would increase with attunement, but does the proc rate increase as well? Could make a big difference in whether to invest in such a weapon or not, 10% flat chance for a life drain might not do it, but if a death specialist could get a much higher rate, it almost certainly would be strong incentive to invest in such a weapon.

No, I don't think there's currently any connection to the crafters ability to cast the spell and socket a gem. I don't think attunement currently helps that process. At least, it didn't for me and I have my spells trained in the 70's and 80's.

Thanks Baron Fondorlatos, that would have been my guess but it's much better to have information than my guesses ;)

You bring up a good point.
If you don't have the glyph trained at all, will it still proc? And if so, at what skill level? 1? or 10? or 40?
And if you have a glyph at skill 1, 50, 100, or 150, and the weapon procs, does it proc at your skill level, or some built in skill level?

It will still proc, it will only do the 1-36 or whatever damage it says though. Para did the testing for me, and said the death attunment makes the drain life proc do more then that.

Maybe I don't know what you mean by "proc". :)

If you have a high death attunement then the drain life spell will do more damage for you. I thought what we were talking about is if you socket a weapon or enchant a weapon will the weapon be influenced by the crafter's attunement, and from my experience the answer is no.

Will the attuenment of the CASTER of a spell like drain life influence the casting of a spell? Yes, that's how attunement works. But if you give that same weapon to someone with zero attunement in death magic (for example) then it will not work as well.

In the future, I would hope that the more powerful the crafter is at casting a specific spell, the more powerful the "proc" would be in the weapon. That's how specialization should work. If you want to have a very powerful death magic enchantment you would go find a very powerful Necromancer with a very high death attunement. You wouldn't just let anyone enchant or socket the item.

"Proc" typically means 'chance to cast spell on hit'

Procs were pretty nasty in Shadowbane. There were a few elemental debuff spells that could be used to break through your opponent's elemental resists. In that game, there were a few layers of elemental resists which were important for spec builds in wars/banes. Some of the 'procs' in the game would cast fire, lightning, necro, etc types of spells and if you casted elemental debuffs on your opponent before proc-ing them, the proc would be very effective. In Shadowbane the potency of the proc was determined by your INT stat, and also by which stance you were in - for example, some of the spell casters had a defensive, precise and offensive stance. Offensive stance would increase all of your spell damage (including procs) by say 30-50% in offensive stance, but in defensive stance they would do lower than normal damage. Precise stance helped you hit high defense opponents, etc. Every game is a bit different.

I think it would be cool if there was a way not just to increase your chance of a proc by passive Attunement bonuses, but actively make the proc more likely to happen. So for example, we have a weapon charge meter. The fuller you'd charge your meter, the more likely you'd be to unleash your proc... similar to a critical hit.

    Does it work this way?

The banish undead is 100% right now. The water and moon gems are done now too, I just updated the original post.

Ok, well in that case, attunement REALLY doesn't matter. Because the spell (in the case of life drain) works every time you use your weapon.

Something I've been wondering about: Can Two-handed weapons have 2 different gems socketed and separately enchanted (Example: Sun and Fire enchantments)? I could see a problem if it allowed opposite attuned gems like fire and water.

Your attunment is going to effect the power of the proc, IF the proc hits. For example. If someone with no death attunment uses a weapon with a drain life proc, and the proc goes off they might get healed for 18. If someone with 132 death attunment uses that same weapon, and the proc goes off, they might be healed 50. This is what I mean what I say attunment effects the procs. It does not increase the chance of the proc going off, as far as I know, it just increases the effects of the proc, when it does go off.

I dunno, guys. I just went into Wynton's Folly to test out my "banish undead" wand, and I don't know how much attunement is affecting this, if at all. I had 122 life attunement for this experiment, and the banish on my wand was hitting for between 4 and 30 points. My glyph banish (which is at 100) was hitting for around 200 and critting at 400 on average. I felt like it was wasting the durability of my wand more than anything, haha. I really like the idea of these gemmed procs, but not so much for pure casters, I guess. For now, I will stick with my 2.5% life effectiveness. I can also confirm that the banish 100% is a typo. It was probably 10%
