Offline game: Do companions learn new skills?

    Today I took my companions out for a little adventure for the first time in ages. To my surprise, Dupre wasn't engaging all the mobs melee-style, but was using Banish Undead on zombies and skeletons. I can't remember him doing this before, but maybe I just never paid attention. Or do the companions learn new skills as they level up?
