    Rock on.

Got no problem with that. It will be an interesting conversation. :)

Have you never been in a role playing (meatspace, pen and paper and funny shaped dice) situation where your character is you thrust into a fantasy/otherworldly situation?

I've personally run several campaigns in different genres with such a premise and been a participant in several others run by other people.

My favorite one was a long running Superhero genre campaign in which my group of friends had a 'radiation accident' when a tanker truck full of low-level radioactive waste collided with the last tanker truck of Billy Beer... It had profound effects on them. :)

I'm not sure the idea is that the character is supposed to differ; I think Lord British would rather people saw the character as themselves, for the "full effect" of what he's aiming for. But nothing will stop other styles, like what you plan.

My character can never be myself. My real personality doesn't make even for a good bartender — too risk adverse, besides I really hate confronting other persons. I don't think I would ever pick up a sword and take part in a real fight (even though I actually do know how to use a sword, or at least a katana, and I know enough about unarmed combat to potentially take down anyone that is not a trained fighter).

My game personality is the complete opposite. A daredevil that, in PvE, goes for the riskiest activities. If there is no risk of my character dying — and I mean real risk, not merely some slight potential — then I'm not having fun. And, in PvP, I play for the fun, without caring about whether I will win or lose — in fact, I only have fun in PvP while whether I will win or lose is still undecided, so much that I will typically go for high risk tactics just to keep the fight from becoming boring.

If it is us in the game, not a role played character, we should go through something similar to the NFL scouting combine or the US Army Physical Fitness test to determine our starting stats. ;) Also, send your driver's license or medical records to determine your character's body shape.

Yes, I don't think I'll have enough time to play another character. T_T

I can see both sides of the fence, and both arguments pro and con for single and multi toons have merit.

However coming fresh out of Wurm, I've really been left with a massively bad taste in my mouth for being forced to have a whole separate paid account just to have another character, and all of the ridiculous costs associated with it. So, with that scarring experience, I'd have to vote NO, I'm not really 'cool' with that. I'll adapt. But only because I have to.

I actually had an additional founder account before I realized that I could only have ONE character per account, and like a derpbot rolled the lesser account into the greater and probably kinda shot myself in the foot. Had I known I definitely would not have done that for the pittance that it raised to my pledge. I'd be an Edelmann with, or without that second account rolled into it. But oh well. What's done is done. One account it is then. I may upgrade my account again before all this is said and done, but I likely won't create another separate non-founder pledge just to have another toon.

I did however, convince my lovely wife to join me on this fantastic journey which is SotA. She's a crafting oriented kind of chicky, so whatever she picks, I'll probably pick something to be complementary. We're not informed enough, and not enough information about the crafting has been released yet to make a truly informed decision as to which ones we'd like to focus on.

Why you bringing a wife into this? You're supposed to be able to do everything yourself with no companionship whatsoever. And have a huge house to show off. What are you thinking, working together with somebody else, let alone a "wife". Sheesh.

    My silly sarcasm aside...

As many characters as you want, single player mode.

5 characters on friends only online mode.

1 character on full online mode.

Edit: Oh, and they're all independent. None can cross to another mode.

Single player offline or friends only online do not really interest us. We are interested in contributing to a vibrant global economy. To each their own of course, but it would be zero fun for me to become the best crafter in the world... simply because I'm the ONLY crafter in my world. :p

I may fiddle around with the single player if the storylines are divergent just for fun. But I'll never put any real time into it.

My point is that's where you can get your fix when you're tired of doing one thing in the global game. But the full online game is where you affect other people and if everyone has only one character there, things get interesting, instead of the same old grind. Sure, people can have multiple accounts, I may be one of them. But no way to stop that and it does generate revenue for the game to get better. So at least if you see someone with two characters you know they're helping support the game.

Not exactly accurate. You can even pick up NPCs as companions. So even in the single player game you're not alone.

One character per account and hard skillcaps. Specialisation should mean something...

--I like single character per account. There is something detrimental to having a stable of characters, covering all the crafting skills and spreading your expertise across several classes.
--Single character means more player interaction regarding crafting (unless they let NPCs sell EVERYTHING like was done in old Ultima Online)
--single player means players (hopefully) will learn how to play their role; no more "I'm really a tank but I just wanted to play my healer for a bit...." Be what you WANT to be.
--Single player means your character's reputation will be out there for all to see. "YOU" can't hide behind multiple characters.
--When your group gets together, you know who is what. This assumes we don't have to suffer the anonymous groups currently doing "run and gun" instances in today's mmorpgs. I hope to develop a group of regular friends, or perhaps find the old ones from days of yore.
