Loved the overhead map in this game, it was great. Id go over there look at some mountains, go over there look at some ruins...

Now, the travel off road is so annoyingly slow that I no longer do anything but stay on the road.

You had a wonderful thing there before and no it has been ruined.
Why make a time sink out of something that was so enjoyable?
    Pointless.
Sorry, had to say something. :(

They stated as to why in the patch notes. Stay on the roads, go fast. Deviate from the roads, go slow. This is how its' been in previous Ultima games that had the overland map.

And don't make this a dramatic issue by saying something has been ruined. Just read the patch notes and understand why it was done then look at how to get around it. It's clearly laid out.

When the near-future mobs show up on the overland map and you are over encumbered walking off road. expect pain. That could have awesome potential. Right now encumbrance is wimpy to pointless unless there is a control point in your path.

Ist a preparation for the upcoming roving encounters in R35.
If you travel off-road, it will be hard to avoid them.

Think scale of world, and the increased importance of housing and placement in Novia etc.

All for the good of the future of SotA.

I am trying, but all I get is " pointless time sink " and to teleport to friends.

I first thought like that as well, so it's a common thing for us to do.

But points then come to mind after analyzing many different aspects and not solely look at it from my own gameplay.

I agree with OP. I can't stand the slow speed. Just a giant waste of time... I am not as excited to explore anymore.

If you think this feature being a timesink or waste of time, that you should think about the whole game as one as well. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but this game is not about speed-leveling or speed running. It's about exploring a world and it's only logical, that you cannot run through a dense wood or marshlands as fast as you can run alon a road. I like that feature. It has been this way since the very first Ultimas and so should it be. I say: thank you!

You also get slowed down by tufts of grass, flowers, meadows...

I'm sure overland speed boosts will be up soon enough, just $19.95 in the cash store or one COTO per day...

There will be town blessing that increase the travel speed coming up.

Meanwhile, just gotta hang in there and use coconut mount and bind auto run key to some easy to press location (I use middle mouse button). Fast travel works too if you don't like soaking the world scenery and the background music.

Maybe they could put some roads in that actually go between all the cities

It's been slowed down even on the roads from what it was previously. Slow even on the roads and using coconuts. Just going from Spite to Etceter was miserably slow with coconuts and staying on the road. After that travel I just logged out, and will come back next release to see how it is.

Wouldn't doubt something like that, I expect speed potions that cost you coto's or something.

I love it. With the upcoming roving encounters it will be very tactical to try to avoid them or maybe catch up to them.

i like the change, but they need to spend a day walking the roads to fix the spots the did not "paint" as roads that are and continue to fix the spots where the collision boxes dont match the terrain.

This game really needs to decide what it wants to be and how they are going to get there. If this is going to be a 1990 remake of a UO game, fine. Announce that, release a game people will play for nostalgic value for a month, then move onto a fun game. If it is going to be an MMO that is repetitive by nature and pushes team play then, announce that and stop making repetitively boring time sinks that take from multiplayer gaming. If it is going to be PVP centered, announce that and move on.

The game is trying to balance Single, Multi and PVP and all you end up doing is robbing Peter to Pay Paul and no one is getting what they truly want. If this is the direction you want to take then start developing options based on the game settings. If single players want a nostalgic UO of the past, then put these features in single player only and give options in Multiplayer to turn this crap off. PVP wants spells changed making them inaffective in PVM, make all spells do different dmg to mobs vs players.

Then you can balance each section based on how someone wants to play instead of taking from one to give to the other.

If this will persist they need roads connecting all the cities ASAP. I have to climb a hill to get to my home city and it's incredibly frustrating. Made me log out in frustration.
