I expect pet names will not be unique like player names, I can't think of any reason to require pets have unique names, and many reasons to allow people to name them the same. Such as, no need to reserve and allowing players to name theirs whatever they like, including duplicating names of their own pets if they so desire. All my pets will be named Zeke, after my cat.[IMG]

I don't really have a strong preference for pet names, just trying to gather all threads that relate to Pets under one roof

    @Isaiah

What's your opinion of tamers that have a "bond" having to share hp with their animals (tamer takes damage when pet takes damage)?

That's an awesome idea, and I haven't even thought of it at all. However having a pet of a particular type such as imps and other familiars... it would make sense that the mage should take some damage while a familiar is attacked since they are magically bonded.

Take a look at Ni No Kuni and their pet system :) (you can find u-tube videos that play through the entire game - I have a feeling you will like their system)

Taming is a must for me. It was my favorite thing to do in UO. I don't like limits on pets to a certain extent. I would like to control a pack of wolves. 6 would be excellent. 2 Dragons would be nice. 3 lesser Dragons or Drakes would work. I think your skill should determine how many pets you can control. I want rare spawns! I must have rare spawns! And those should come in different color variations. I'd like to see a rare albino spawn for animal groups. The more of these you could use as a mount the better! UOs pet system was excellent. I'm hoping the Devs know this and since some of them were involved with UO they will try to bring that here.

Not to worry, half they can skip because it's just arguments about if we should or shouldn't allow dragon taming :p

Animal Taming was one of my favorite activities in UO. I can only hope that SotA will have a taming system somewhere near the robustness of UO. I really hope it's not just a small gimmick.

I liked the stats on your pet i mean how you could level them up in skills, i hope that's what collars are used for, I thank the id of having to have anther class/crafter make a item for taming defeats the purpose of taming, as a tamer i don't wanna have to look for a crafted item, that's just to much you should be able to tame with out. help from someone.
Breading is a good Id i said that at kick starter, that be cool to have 2 dragons lay a egg or whatever and get a baby train it up.

The collar idea is to make the taming a more "involved" process - I like the idea ... and it would give me reason to craft beyond making weapons/armor for money

Somehow collar making seems more natural .. being that you would be in the wild and possibly hunting and gathering anyways.

I as a tamer should not have to rely on someone to do a skill, i mean if you made common collars, purchasable that's fine, but to have to rely on someone for my skill that's not fun, and not fair, since for me to tame i would have to find a vendor or someone to make it for me.

Well - you can do it your self :) ... the system that we have is two fold - you have skills points for combat and skill points for crafting

Because we have a classless system all you really need is the collar - the better the collar - the greater chance for you to succeed.

Yes its more involved - but this game is encouraging a thriving crafting community - this plays into that and seems a little more appropriate in the realm of "logically designed gameplay" - not realism but a fair in game representation

There is apparently going to be taming in the game, but taming does not appear on the crafting sigil (or combat or magic sigils). Will there be additional skills added to game not on those sigils, or will taming have a system independent of putting skills in a tree?

Not sure - I think that would technically be in the crafting skill tree - if you want to be a "tamer" then you would specialise in making collars

Other than that what determines if you are a tamer or not is the act of taming ... hence no taming "class"

Likely there will be collars in tailoring, leather working and blacksmithing trees. Now, whether taming will be a function of the item, or a separate skill used in tandem with the collar (I would prefer this model), we've yet to see. It could fit under forestry, but is it "crafting"? Taming could hold a huge tree of its own, with different training for different animals, and possibly gear. It would be great to see mounts as tame-able creatures when that feature makes it in. Warhorses, etc.

Also, applying something akin to weapon affinity with taming would be amazing. Bonus with animal type, for instance. I wonder if it would be possible to befriend a creature that stays persistent on the world server as a mob, but you could release it back to the wild and go find it again at a later time for another adventure ..? IE animal companions?
