Little confused when people talk about placing their town on the corrct hex next to another or on the map. I dont see any hex maps for reference...Am I missing something ?

The original map of New Britannia was drawn on a hex grid and the early implementation of the ingame world map also had hexes. Even though the current world map looks more natural, the term hex has just stuck.

The dev map is still hex based. You can notice this when you have a Enter scene sign, walk around and see where it shows and where it doesn't.
So I think the placement and the math of the coming overland path finding is hexagon based.
However the player experience is no longer hexagonal.

But the original wording of the POT store used hex.

So people should really switch and talk about coordinates instead of hexes.
