Been running around for a bit in online mode and have been seeing some icons occasionally next to player names over their heads.

They seem to be coming in two varieties: gold crown and laurels, and crown with crossed swords.

Haven't seen a reference to these (yet) and was wondering what they stood for?

Correct, the crossed swords and crown is party leader and the crown with the laurel is guild leader.
