My hitching is noticeably worse in this release.

Did it run better or worse (or the same) with 2 modules?

It runs a lot worse with 16GB. And the OOM killer kicked in just after the last screenshot./

So after days of testing some setups, I got now a preferred way of playing SotA with as less hitching as possible. This of course will not eliminate the native hitching. But it is at least playable on GNU/Linux.
Please note this is based on a system with nVidia, so the Xorg part will not work on other GPU's.
    1) Enter your BIOS and disable HPET.
    2) Install LXDE desktop environment. This is very lightweight, I mostly use this one to play and use GNOME for my normal Desktop.
    3) Make a backup of you Xorg.conf, and edit/replace the device section with the one I posted.
    Code:
    Section "Device"
        Identifier "Device0"
        Driver "nvidia"
        VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
        Option "AllowIndirectGLXProtocol" "off"
        Option "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0 {ForceCompositionPipeline=On, ForceFullCompositionPipeline=On}"
        Option "TripleBuffer" "true"
        Option "ColorSpace" "RGB"
        Option "ColorRange" "Full"
        Option "Dac8Bit" "false"
    EndSection

    4) Change the nvidia-settings to mirror these settings: (At least we have propr AA support with this configuration)
OpenGL settings -> Disable Sync to VBlank (unfortunately SotA uses Unity vsync, so no screen tearing when disabling the nvidia one), Enable Allow Flipping, Image settings whatever you want, Enable Conformant Texture Clamping.
Antialiasing settings -> Override application settings, slider to Off, Enable FXAA, Anisotropic Filtering x3 or x4.
    PowerMizer -> Prefer Maximum Performance.

Note: Always reinstall your nvidia drivers after any kernel update you receive, some distro's do this automatically, mine does not (Gentoo).

Also try installing/using a kernel before 4.18. As the 4.18/4.19 seems to have some performance regressions. I would recommend a kernel in the 4.17 series for the time being.
Please give it a try and let me know.

Great, can you give me the Windows 10 version of this? ;)

You could enable/disable those nvidia settings, and disable HPET in your BIOS. More then that for W10 will not be possible hehe.
You can turn of HPET in Windows10 with command: bcdedit /deletevalue useplatformclock
To enable it again use: bcdedit /set useplatformclock true

HPET is more system heavy with timer events, and the TSC is a lot faster/lighter. This will improve performance a little bit. And as every little improvement helps us native hitching players.

I'm getting pretty significant hitching every 15 seconds or so, especially if I whip the camera around. I'm getting plenty of FPS, though.

I stopped playing till they fix it. @Chris , is there any ETA on fixing this longstanding issue? I really enjoy the game, but it has become unplayable, unenjoyable for me.

I certainly don't pay like I used to simply because I become frustrated and quit.

Finally spent some time XPing in R58, and the hitching is as bad as it ever was. :/

    @Feeyo
What app do you use to get GPU stats (like memory usage)?

For linux I typically use nvidia-smi. Provides some great details how the card is performing. I've never exceeded 70% utilization

I think Windows 10 has it built into the task manager. I'd have to go check. Don't do Windows very often though I have it for games like Overwatch ;-)

Does SotA utilize more than 2 GB of video memory on Windows?

Yes on nvidia cards: nvidia-smi and mostly glances + gpu plugins.
On AMD cards I use a mesa Gallium HUD.
