Apparently this is not a bug but I'm failing to see the logic behind it. For instance in the screenshot below, why does my avatar disappear? Wouldn't it make more sense for the tree to disappear?

I have had the same experience, when I get close to a wall or rock and pan the camera - poof, my avatar fades in a pixel-ated fashion, and when I move away from the wall, he pixel-ates back into view. Seems strange to me.

It's not just on the overworld. I stood up against a house wall, then rotated my camera between myself and the house and POOF!

Maybe it's something to do with the new Unity, but it's definitely odd.

Title: Avatar disappears in town scenes depending on camera angle
    Reproduction Rate: easy?
    Blocker? no
    User Specs:
    OS: Mac OS X 10.9.5
    CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz (4) System RAM: 16384
GPU: Intel HD Graphics 4000 OpenGL Engine GPU RAM: 1024
    SotA.EarlyAccess.OSX.64.504.Date.05.19.17
    Area: Kingsport
    Area Display Name: Kingsport
    Loc: (51.8, 25.1, 6.4)

    Details:
    Steps to Reproduce:
Inside a town scene, stand next to a wall and rotate the camera between yourself and the wall. When you get close enough, there will be a dithering effect (note: my graphics are set to Fastest) and your avatar model will disappear.

This also happens if you are a meter of so away from the wall, put the camera up next to the wall, then back up.

Vanishing can also happen on the overworld when you approach one of the invisible "walls" that fence in the walkable area, but that may be for different reasons.

When the camera gets too close to the avatar, he/she disappears. This looks totally intentional to me.

In my screenshot above the camera is as far away from my avatar as it is possible to get it. The avatar doesn't vanish when the camera is close to it, the avatar vanishes when the camera is close to scenery.

The camera is getting pushed closer to your avatar due to the scenery.

And yet it is still behind the top of the tree.

You don't have to take my word for it. You can actually go into the world map and try it for yourself. Anytime the camera moves closer than the minimum distance that you can zoom it (even just a little) then your avatar disappears.

I tested and you are correct. The effect is still that your avatar fades in and out of existence as things you're running past affect the camera.

I'm not sure why this is needed on the world map though, since you can't go into first person view there.

Now that I have seen the patch notes, I see what they were trying to do.

That being said, it is way too sensitive on the overworld. I used to be able to see my own character on the overworld by pulling the camera down behind a light pole or other tall object that clipped the camera, and it was fun to do. But now the avatar model fades no matter how far away it is from the camera, and also fades in a lot of situations where the avatar is near an invisible terrain wall.
