Ranged was nerfed hard

    • The base damage of crossbows is the same as longbows; 7 - 21.
    • The strength bonus for longbow is "very small", which, I believe, translates to strength / 50.
    • The strength bonus for crossbow is "none".
    • The critical damage multiplier for longbow is 2.
    • The critical damage multiplier for crossbow is 2.5.

    A lower level character will probably be better off using a crossbow where a higher level character, with higher strength, will be better off using a longbow.

    @Chris: my (limited) data from QA #491: ranged is still nerfed by 25%.
    Longbow auto attack against Elder Wolf:
    R40 hits: 15-33, critical 30-67, but mainly 40-50. 21% crits.
    QA 491 hits: 11-26, critical 28-52, but mainly 30-40. 22% crits.
