    Greetings Avatars,

    Monday is Memorial Day here in the United States. It is a day we honor those who sacrificed their lives in military service to our country. We are going to leave the game open all day tomorrow. Enjoy yourselves but also please take a moment to honor those who have fallen.

    Thank you,
    Starr Long

    From this website:

    (An English poem, the sentiment of which can apply to any who made the ultimate sacrifice for their respective countries. "We will remember them.")

    For The Fallen

    With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
    England mourns for her dead across the sea.
    Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
    Fallen in the cause of the free.

    Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
    Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
    There is music in the midst of desolation
    And a glory that shines upon our tears.

    They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
    Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
    They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
    They fell with their faces to the foe.

    They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
    Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
    At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them.

    They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
    They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
    They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
    They sleep beyond England's foam.

    But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
    Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
    To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
    As the stars are known to the Night;

    As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
    Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
    As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
    To the end, to the end, they remain.

    Author Notes

    During September-October 1939 throughout ten Allied countries, and upon the suggestion of FIDAC (Inter-allied Federation of Ex-Servicemen), the 25th anniversary of Laurence Binyon's "For the Fallen", was observed.

    This is one of the most famous and enduring war poems, and it was written at an historic moment … just after the retreat from Mons and the victory of the Marne.

    As to how it came to be written, Laurence Binyon, who celebrated his 70th anniversary on 10 August 1939, says: "I can't recall the exact date beyond that it was shortly after the retreat. I was set down, out of doors, on a cliff in Polzeath, Cornwall. The stanza "They Shall Grow Not Old" was written first and dictated the rhythmical movement of the whole poem."

    Thank you Protalarium!

    ...And a thanks to those who fought for freedom anywhere in the world.

    Karrolanth,
    That is a truly beautiful poem from a British brother across the great Atlantic. Thanks for sharing that! I really enjoyed it.

    Since players come from all over the world to visit this forum, it would be wise not to promote anglo saxon patriotic culturocentric references here, since the pride of the winners is often the pain of the loosers, and history is always rewritten by the winning empire to its glory.

    Thanks for your understanding...

    I did this in my house lot for a small contest that I did in my own fansite. I wish to dedicate it for the fallen and the world peace.

    If anyone want to visit it is in the first right-side land lot in Braemar.

    I can understand how not knowing much about Memorial Day might lead you to believe this is some kind of jingoist propaganda or about some kind of victory celebration of war but nothing could be further from the truth. Memorial Day is about those who died in service, not about who won or lost. We honor it equally for the soldiers in wars won and wars lost. It was actually started to honor the dead on both sides of the American Civil War so even at its birth this holiday was about the dead, not the "winners".

    I am sorry if my reference to this holiday offended you in any way.

    darkstarr, i never stopped to think others might not understand what it is about. thats my typical american ignorance of oth3res kicking in.
    i agree with darkstarr though, its not about winning or losing its about remembering those who served on both sides. its kindof silly of me to just have it ingrained in my psyche that people understand about memorial day because its all ive ever known :)

    regardless, it IS another day of access which everyone can be greatful for!

    In Australia, we remember the fallen on Anzac Day. Thank you, Starr, for your tribute to those lost.

    Yes, but it's still an US-only thing. The page on Wikipedia says: "Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the men and women who died while serving in the country's armed forces." and "Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service."

    So clearly, it's US only, US military only and doesn't care at all about the dead of the other side. So I can understand people objecting an US-centric holiday being promoted in a forum for an international game. Especially when the US military isn't held in high esteem throughout most of the world at the moment, drones and all.

    Edit: And no, I don't want to offend anyone with that. People killed in war should be remembered and if it's just to avoid new ones.

    @DarkStarr - a thoughtful and sensitive post; thank you. I can understand somewhat the sentiments expressed by @Cabrens, but I believe - and hope it is indeed true - that the world as a whole realizes that there is no future, glory or profit in war. This does not stop us from honouring those (of any side) who gave their lives in service to their country. They made the ultimate sacrifice; they deserve to be venerated.

    In memory of all the men and women, around the world, that have sacrificed their lives in military service protecting the lives, and the futures, of all our loved ones, Avatarsradio.com will be having a moment of silence at 3pm cst, where we will be silencing the radio to give time to stop and remember those who have fought and gave their lives for their freedoms.

    I'm from Europe and I don´t have any problem about this and I respect 100% this Memorial Day, as well as many other as Xmas or Thanksgiving. And just one point: It's a game for the international market, but is not an international game. I support 100% this kind of days, and I did the same when I was in Korea and I went to show my condolences in their own Memorial Day, trying to understand the pain of that people and what peace really means. That is respect.

    And we have even a free day of R6.
