So, say we removed auto attacks as a natural action, so we just had abilities to deal damage. This has been discussed enough that we all get the general idea. We'd be able to emphasise more on the damage and effects of abilities and rely less on an action we have no control over.

Abilities can scale based on your weapon of course, so what you're holding affects how your abilities function. I am guessing this is already true regardless.

But, what if, to encourage more minimal decks, you introduced auto-attacks as the replacement of slugs. Different weapon types would provide different types of auto-attack.

For example, with a two handed hammer you might get "Heavy Bludgeon". Then, make these attacks benefit their related trees by making auto-attacks Opening Attacks.

Simply put, an Opening Attack could, following the previous example, highlight all the bludgeoning attacks in your bar after use, providing an additional effect based on the weapon. So the two handed hammer's "Heavy Bludgeon" might provide a 30% slow for 2 seconds on your next bludgeoning hit and a 10% damage boost against slowed targets and a 20% damage boost against knocked down targets for 5 seconds. But, you know, more concisely worded :p

Then a one-handed mace might provide a different auto. Other bludgeoning weapons providing other autos, etc.

But it'd be worth remembering, if you exceed your minimum slots, you don't get the auto-attacks.

This isn't so much an addition of something new. It's just moving auto-attacks to your bar, removing them from uncontrollable circumstance and making them more interesting. At the same time, we get something that fills out unused slots without having to use slugs (Since the issue with unused slots is stacking one ability. This still fixes the odds of that ability appearing, but gives you something better than a blank (boring) slug).
