Server

Is it possible to create a private-server? Cause I have a few friends (17) I want to play with but we all are not interested in a public-server....
We want to create our own world and want to have our own RP there....But so our little project won't work...

Because....if I want a "Friends Only" -server I want a world only with my friends and if I want to play on a Public-Server I play on a Public-Server....

Does anyone know how to create an own server?

 

@Chris could tell you whether this is possible, but I suspect not - at least not any time soon. The alternative of playing on the public server in Friends Only mode is currently restricted to members of a party, and party size is restricted to 8. However, there are plans to allow multiple parties to be linked. Possibly through a party of party leaders, or some such mechanism. That would allow your friends to play without ever seeing or interacting with anyone except each other.

 

I think they said at SotaCon, you are your own server.
The entire game is on each players PC and they can be the 'host'.

Next time you are in the game check to see who the nearby players are.
Then type in the chat box /whoismaster
That person's pc is hosting the instance. (many times it is you)
It still 'talks' the Portalarium server but is not hosted there but if you loose that connection your game quits.

If this is not correct, someone please let us know.

 

I believe this is correct up to a point, but I assume there is still a central database and server that contains information about inventories, bank contents, object placement in scenes, etc., and that also takes care of anything that must be server authoritative in order to avoid exploits. Keep in mind that nothing on a player's PC can be trusted, so some things must always be kept on/decided by a central server.

 

Yes that is how control occurs. I use stock trading software that works in a similar fashion. It all runs on my PC but will not work for long without a ping from the server which is the way they talk and handshake.

Looks like they disabled it.
Used to work before Christmas but I've been out for a few weeks, may have been taken out.

 

I know it was in during R37 because I just learned about it. Maybe disabled it with "R37.5".

You don't have to have your own server in this game. I am not exactly sure how you plan to play but a player owned town is a perfect example of having themed play. What game would give you your own server? Most games don't have the ability to theme your play. Hopefully if you are new you will give the game a chance. There is so much to it and so much more coming and if you allow many of us will be willing to show you the side of sota that is not always apparent when first coming into the game. I am Majoria in game and I have access to a very quiet player owned town to give an example to you. but whatever best wishes on finding what you are looking for.

 

Considering the game is under heavy construction and still beta I seriously doubt it. Even after I doubt it, they have never stated that it would be open to others.

I do support it. When I shut down my NWN module after 5 years of running it and serving 200K people I handed it over the the NWN community for anyone to run anywhere they wanted to run it. It was picked up by some hard core people who took it and modified it to be even far better for several years.
