Since at the present time, short duration food buffs are bleh, there is no market for them and really no reason to even craft them. My suggestion is to make these buffs powerful albeit short duration. There is a lot of room for creative short term buffs similar to some of the potions. The very short duration would make these not overpowering and a pain to use, but carrying them around could be advantageous in the right circumstance. We need to stimulate a market for the poor cooks in the game and assigning a select set of buffs to the items could be an exciting design. So to summarize, short term food buffs would be greater than longer term buffs but would be difficult to use. A nice trade off IMO.

I agree we need to make these foods have a use. I really like the idea of adding more to cooking which never got an update and has only one skill. So how's about a skill to improve food when you specialize in cooking. For example You can take recipes and enchant them like similar to how masterworing or enchanting works. Add features such as duration is longer, perhaps occasionally an unexpected fun chaotic fun feature happens. Cooking really needs an update. @Bzus

The entire Cooking Skill needs an actual pass on it.

Unfortunately thats not gonna happen. Chris stated in a stream they cant make food stats increase if specialised because they cant stack afterwards ( having different values ).

But could they add a permanent value IF specialized?

IE: once you spec into cooking spec you receive a *hidden* permanent buff that increases “food_buff” gained by a %?

Edit: or I guess if not, they could allow 3 food buffs if specialized. Lol

Edit 2: makes me wonder how alchemy will get specialized; given using buff pots

I doubt that that part of alchemy will gain a benefit. I suspect you’ll see that the design for specialization helps enchanting and master working only. So for alchemy that will help enchantment (enchanting) but nothing else. (The specialization were a design problem to solve the randomness of those two skills. As I understand it. Maybe there will be more, but not much has been said about it.)

I wasn't talking about alchemy being involved in cooking and cooking does need a pass. For example no one or few will use lower tier foods so why even have them? Giving cooking it's own masterworking skill is a chance to improve the situation. Besides Bzus may have some plans to give a needed pass to cooking. Hopefully he does because it needs it.

Simple thing would be to leave the existing foods as they are and add a list of gourmet recipes for specialist cooks that are actually economical to make and desirable to use. Out of the dozens of food recipes that currently exist, only the same 5 or 6 actually get made and consumed by players. Most of the food recipes aren't worth the gold cost for the benefit they give. With the new fish recipes we saw a clear lack of insight - the recipes are either pointless/inferior or require a rare trophy item not worth wasting on a short term buff.

Yes, the entire skill needs a review/overhaul.
Specialist/gourmet recipes could expand this further or at the very least, band-aid it.

The other night I was looking for something in cooking that provided more than +3 Intelligence. I was surprised to discover higher Intelligence buffs were only available if I purchased a cake or some other confection. Or did I miss something?

Spent some time googling this weekend. So far this seems to be the case.

I'm hoping for a pass in cooking. There is only a single level of skills to level up. Cooking needs some love.

This is correct and the lack of int food has been an imbalance since day 1 still yet to be addressed.

You can craft int food higher than +3, but it requires either:
    a) fishing up a "rare" class trophy fish (In 20 hours of fishing, I got 1)
    b) hoping for a "lucky drop" boss loot rng of a phoenix talon (or buy one for like 20k gold or so?) and cook it. The resulting food adds int, but there are penalties on it as well.

Both are typical slot machine bs.

Even the +3 int food requires tedious pacu fishing and the regen components on it are substandard.

Ahh right. Forgot about the phoenix. Good point. Still, I can make higher str/dex foods easily enough. Intelligence food buffs however seem far more difficult to come by than I would have expected.

Cooking definitely needs a once over :D

 Give us our day and our daily bread...

I'd like food to last longer, yet have a player option which automatically feeds your avatar or alerts your avatar to eat (*I'm/you're hungry*) 3 times daily, which should also have benefits if you feed your avatar regularly :D~TL~

Maybe some more effects so everything isn't a repeat... like

small crafting bonuses ( harvesting speed, crafting speed, 2 additional batch count, +1% to masterwork, +1 meticulous, +2 fishing skill, ect... )

    jumping higher ( doesn't stack )

avatar glows and creates light to see by ( maybe more of a potion thing )

    5% more gold drops

duration depending on bonus but all short.

    @Aldo

    Very much agreed.

I didn't get the food implementation in SotA.

The higher the level of food - it increases both effect and duration...
That makes some food just simply worthless-good-better-best, with no hard choices for the player.

Where other games have made us chose between effect OR duration.

    Take this game for instance.
In it you can eat 1 meal + 1 dessert. Where each adds a 'stuffed' value afterwards where you cannot eat any more until the stuffed duration ends.
Where if you ate the really good stuff you'd get a great buff but then when those effects wear off you'd still be 'stuffed' for a while.
snipped the table to show the principle, bonus cookies if you know the game

This makes it a real choice where each food item could potentially fill a niche in a larger strategy/playstyle. Instead of some simply being "better".

Applying this to SotA you could have several different tiers.
    • Snacks - small effect, short duration, +0 stuffed
    • dinner - medium effect, medium duration, +½ stuffed
    • dessert - medium effect, short duration, +½ stuffed
    • sallad - small effect, medium duration, +½ stuffed
    • nourishing meal - small effect, long duration, +fully stuffed
    • treat - high effect, short duration, +fully stuffed

The different use cases would be
    • Snacks - when you want a buff but still want to keep your options open, since it doesn't add stuffed you can replace it with whatever whenever.
    • dinner/dessert/sallad - when you want to have something going which you can then top up depending on need
    • Nourishing meal - when you want a lasting effect so that you don't want to have to think about it. Where the effect is longer than the stuffed duration, so after the stuffed duration expires it could be replace with something else.
    • Treat - right before a boss battle or such a thing, you know you will get a great buff for a while, with a 'cooldown' afterwards of being 'stuffed' without buff effect.
    i.e. choices that matter.
Then of course some diversity on the effects just like they have now to add more flavor.

More reason to eat different types of foods. Reasons that make lower tier foods have use. Such as ability to improve them too. ;)

Random food buffs would be fun, people could “Fish” for a good food buff!

    And we all know that people LOLLOVELOL fishing! {;

I'd like to be able to combine short duration items to create slightly longer and more useful food items.

I want to see "long duration food 3 time a day, but I also want illegal food/consumables", which is something Lord British mentioned as something he wanted here long ago.

We need our normal food, and then we need our "SOTA Red Bulls" :D~TL~
