Slain by "Sacrifice" - using Death Ray ?

I was fighting a red spider and got attacked by an elder wolf -- I *think* I cast death ray, and it healed me, and then killed me - saying I took damage from "Sacrifice" - and was slain by my Sacrifice? I don't have any chaos magic or soul tap equipped.. so I'm not sure why it took damage?

Nobody in my guild ever heard of this, so I'm bugging it - hopefully it is a bug, and not something stupid?
